If they work it as sort of a minor league system for the NFL and can work with the NFL, I think it can work.

If they try to compete with the NFL, no.

I've thought for a while that a minor league system in the NFL would be a good idea, so I'm hoping this works.

Man, with college football on Saturday, the NFL on Sunday and Monday, college on Tuesday and the UFL Wednesday through Friday, there will be football every night of the week for a while.

That'll be great.

The problem with any sort of minor-league system for the NFL is that by time a player is done developing, his career is probably half-over.

That's a good point. It's similar, though, to NFL teams pulling players out of the Arena League. It gives them a chance for some kind of NFL career, at least.

No doubt. They would be served better by exploiting the window between the end of the NBA/NHL season and the beginning of the NFL season. Heck I got so bored today I actually watched part of a CFL game.

I would hate to be on that Vegas team playing in the summer.

I'm not so sure. One practical reason why minor leagues in football don't work is that the useful life of a football player is so short. Every snap of the ball, the clock is ticking as more punishment builds up on the body.

Putting something between college and the pros would just wear players out before they were ever able to play in the NFL. I think it works better to just keep players on the depth chart or practice squads, where they can work on their skills without suffering injuries and surgeries that take away their natural abilities.

I'm not opposed to this league idea though. I hope it works. Can't be worse than the XFL.

A minor league system likely wouldn't produce any stars or anything, but it would give guys a chance at the NFL who wouldn't otherwise get it.

Generally, a non-rookie on a practice squad isn't a serious candidate to make a roster. They're usually just there to fill space in case someone gets hurt (at best). However, in the UFL, those players will be getting game experience and will have a chance to develop in game situations (though granted against much lesser talent). They will get the same wear, yes, but it would be an opportunity for guys to play a couple or a few years in the NFL who wouldn't have played at all before. And it gives teams a chance to pluck out some guys who have been playing games, move them right into the lineup and get a little extra production from players.

Along with the UFL, the USFL is apparently making a return.

Few details have surfaced, but Tom Hoffarth of the Los Angeles Daily News, who broke the story on the New USFL, writes that a 10-team league is planned to begin play in the spring. Tom Ramsey, who quarterbacked the Express before the arrival of Steve Young in 1984, is involved in the planning stages with a group trying to get the league running with a 16-game schedule.

Here's the Web site.

In January after the Super Bowl.

Nobody cares about the NBA and Hockey.

I think if it's during the actual NFL season, nobody will care. The NFL is such a juggernaut that it will crush any other football league in direct competition with it.

However, if they wrap their season just before training camp starts, or starts their season just after the Super Bowl, they could have a shot if they play their cards right.

they're not presenting it as competition with the nfl, they're presenting it as a minor league for the nfl. if i understand it correctly, any player can be signed by an nfl team off the roster of a ufl team.

i don't think this is a bad idea. people are into football in the late summer/fall and watch a lot of college/nfl. all the leagues held in football's "offseason" have failed so why not do one concurrent with the nfl season? to me, it's smarter to have a league that runs september to november than one that runs in the spring during march madness, nhl/nba playoffs and the start of major league baseball. who gives a crap about football at that point?

Yeah, everyone always says "as long as they do it when the NFL isn't playing, it will work." Then leagues try that, and wind up bankrupt.

That's true. The season starts shortly after the NFL season begins and the UFL season will end around October or so - thus allowing the UFL players to be signed during the current NFL season. Every player and coach is also on a one-year deal that expires at the end of the UFL season.

I agree with this completely. People are thinking about football in the fall/winter, so as long as UFL games aren't played on Sunday and Monday, why not?

I agree that the league playing at the same time as the NFL might be a good idea. I love to watch any kind of baseball in the summer, but I don't really care that much about watching any fall or winter league when other sports are on.

I don't think it'll last, but it's good for a lot of guys who are just on the outside of the NFL. It allows players to showcase their talents in an actual game scenario instead of a team tryout. So all those guys that just missed the cut for NFL teams out of college would have a chance to keep playing and possibly impress some of the NFL scouts enough to get a second look.

This is a small good sign for the longevity of the UFL.

The NFL Players Association is looking for ways to help out the fledgling United Football League -- and some of its own current players in the process.

In an e-mail sent this morning by the NFLPA, contract advisers were alerted to be mindful of employment opportunities that could come quickly from the UFL, which is in the process of getting ramped up for the beginning of its season in October.

The NFL mandates a cutdown to 75 players in six days, and the final cut to 53 is on Sept. 5. That means as many as 864 football players are going to be getting pink slipped before the 32 NFL teams form eight-man practice squads, which will create opportunities for less than one-third of them.

Base salary for players in the UFL is $35,000, and each team is permitted to pay a quarterback more. A chance to keep playing and stay on the radar of NFL scouts should make it more than worthwhile to most.
