If you accept that Theriot's main offense contribution is an ability to get on base, I wonder if fatigue makes him impatient. June to date is now the third data point, and for the third straight season, Theriot's OBP is falling like a stone.

07 08 09

.347 .415 .374

.330 .407 .339

.272 .369 .296

.437 .395

.315 .384

.257 .360

Jason Marquis' fade in the second half was clear from the stats. Theriot has less history, but so far there is no denying June and Sep are his worst months for OBP. I'd think it's unlikely that the All-Star break provides enough of a rest to rejuvenate him, but that is one possibility. If there's additional evidence, it might be wise for Piniella to give him a day off in early july, just to make sure he recovers this year.

It might be painful waiting, but I think there's reason to believe that the Cubs have an added offense pick-up coming in July, if/when Ramirez returns -- Theriot will get on a lot more often.

Hopefully the offense gets going so we can get Theriot some rest and give Blanco some starts. If the rest of our offense is clicking, I'll take Blanco's glove in the starting lineup a few days a week, even if he can't drive in runs with it like Izturis.

Why not just move Theriot to 2nd, and put Blanco at SS? It's not like Fontenot is setting the world on fire.

Because the point of the move would be rest Theriot

Mike Fontenot in June

.282 .382 .410 OPS of .793

Andres Blanco has an OPS over 100 points lower than Fontenot, why exactly are you wanting to bench Fontenot and his near .800 OPS in the month of June?

Take that 4 for 5 game out in Houston, and get back to me on how good Fontenot has been lately.

Was that an exhibition game?

Nope, I just find it ridiculous that people refer to stats from the month which are pretty much based only off only one huge game since it's half way through the month.

That's how baseball almost always works. .250 hitters don't go 1-for-4 every day.

Fontenot isn't a .250 hitter this year. Although, he is 1 for his last 13 though after that 4 for 5 baseball game.

That is if you want to play the shortsighted stats game.

Are you kidding me? I guess we can just take every players best game in a couple week span out, and say they have sucked too. Never the less, you are still advocating sitting Fontenot, so you can play Andres freaking Blanco? Are you serious? The guy is here for his D plain and simple, hes not here for his offense, and that shows in his stats for his career.

And those 4 hits Font had in that 1 game are only 3 more than Blanco has had the entire year.
