What about Chad Jenkins? He seems to have come on strong.

He went 19 to the Cardinals.

From what I've gathered, the Yankees don't like Tate much. I think they go Renfroe in this situation. They seem to love him.

Thought it was too early for Renfroe. The Yankees have a history of drafting athletic HS OFs and Tate seemed to fit that mold pretty well. Seemed similar to the situations with CJ Henry and Austin Jackson, imo.

No they don't. Jackson was a late sign because of his basketball commitment. CJ Henry was a shortstop who profiled as a shortstop. The Yankees have taken just three high school outfielders in the first six rounds this decade (Estee Harris - 2003 2nd; Chris Smith - 2008 5th; Tim Battle - 2003 3rd round).

5) Slade Heathcott, OF, Texas HS

FWIW I was on the Gould bandwagon when he was a second to third round pick a few months ago.

(sigh)

I want to stay away from Poythress and pretty much any college hitter left, except for the possible and notable exception of Chris Dominguez.

I wouldn't mind Renfroe either.

Damn, you're right. I'll edit in a second.

And Meph, what do you have against Poythress? And for that matter, Sanchez?

the track record of college 1B drafted in the first round is remarkably good compared to other positions and draft ages. i guess the question is, is poythress a guy whose bat is deserving of being a first round pick, or is picking him in the first round a reach?

if he looks like a high-obp masher, i say go for it, but i've never seen him play so i don't know how well he projects as a pro with a wood bat.

There's a selection bias in the said study to the point where we can (almost) ignore it significantly. Some teams will find that out the hard way because of their 2008 draft. As for Poythress he doesn't have elite bat speed nor pure raw power. He's a nonathletic first baseman at best, who probably should be a DH in the long run. Unfortunately (or fortunately?) we play in the National League. I've got no gripes against Sanchez, just doesn't seem to offer a ton of upside. There are a handful of prep catchers I like as well as him that we could get with the second pick.

I'll be the first to admit I haven't seen much of him, but he seemed to have plus raw power to me. I don't expect him to put up the mega power numbers Dominguez will, but I think his ability to make contact covers the gap.

From before this season:

SCOUTING REPORT: Poythress was a middleofthe order presence as a sophomore for a Georgia team that posted the best record in the Southeastern Conference in 2008 and advanced all the way to the championship game of the College World Series. He hit .3741575, finishing

second on the Bulldogs in all categories. He was a late arrival in the Cape Cod League last summer because of Georgia’s deep run into post

season play and departed prematurely from the Cape League when the Bulldogs pulled the plug early on most of their players involved in summer

league competition. Though Poytress played in only 19 of 44 games on the Cape, his arrival coincided with an Orleans hot streak that enabled the

Cardinals to post the best record in the league, and his departure led to a late slide that saw the team bow out of postseason play without winning

a game. Poytress was also rewarded with his selection to the league’s allstar game; he started for the Eastern Division at third base and homered

in two atbats. Despite his team’s improved play with his presence in the lineup and his own selection to the allstar game, Poytress didn’t

particularly distinguish himself in his time on the Cape. He hit an acceptable .311, but power is his meal ticket and yet he failed to hit a single home

run during the regular season. He disappointed scouts with a long, stiff swing and a surprisingly slow bat. Poytress looks like a power hitter with his

big, though slightly overweight frame, and had a reputation coming in of a player with very quick hands, a sound approach at the plate and the raw

power to drive balls hard to all fields. He still managed to generate a lot of power in BP while in the Cape, mainly through the strength in his lower

body. Poytress also didn’t distinguish himself defensively at third base as he lacked the agility, range and smooth actions to remain there in the

long haul. He looked uncomfortable fielding ground balls, tending to sit back on balls hit his way and getting caught flatfooted. In fairness to

Poytress, he spent most of the spring season at Georgia at first base, where he is considered an accomplished defender, and his move across the

diamond during the summer was considered more experimental. He had enough arm for third base and is not as slow on the bases as he looks,

but it was apparent that his home in the field is at first base.

Yeah, it sounds like the Yankees are all over Renfroe (the Red Sox like him a lot too).

Thought he was going to be more of a second rounder, but it seems like he's been flying up the boards and could be a first rounder. However...

29. YANKEES (Jim). So a little local flavor for the Red Sox? If I took a catcher there, I'd go for California high schooler Max Stassi because I think he's a better bet to hit. There's no elite talent with an outlandish price tag for the Yankees to take here, and though they're linked to a possible big-money deal with Mississippi prep two-way star David Renfroe, I believe they can wait a round or two for that. Another two-way star, Texas high school outfielder Slade Heathcott, has been on fire in the state playoffs and drawing lots of high-level scouts. He was very impressive in front of top Yankees officials and they're looking at a lot of outfielders, so Heathcott makes sense.

So, it's not that I disagree with Renfroe as a pick, but that it was a bit too early for him. We'll see come draft day.
