It's nearing that time when he can be called up, right? Is Baltimore planning on calling up, I haven't seen any news on it. The recent call up of David Price makes me think he'll be next and soon. He hasn't really been tearing the cover off the ball in the minors this year. Is it possible Baltimore will keep him in the minors a bit longer? My offense is struggling bad right now, but he's on my bench and I could use that extra boost if he's as good as everyone says he'll be

I've seen reports saying any day now, and most say early June. I'm tempted to pick him up again (I originally drafted him) so I can trade him or McCann in a month. There are guys with awful catching options in my league and I can't figure out why he hasn't been picked up.

I would assume it's gonna happen sooner rather than later. They can't be too happy with Zaun and Moeller's combined production at this point. They're both pathetic. A combined .209/.277/.344 with 2HR and 4RBI in 171 plate appearances. Gross

they're on a homestand now; if they don't call him up this week then they probably won't do it until june 8th - they have a west coast road trip next week.

My guess is they're going to wait for the next homestand. Super 2 status eligibility is right around now, and I think they want to be pretty sure that he won't get it at this point before bringing him up.

Wouldn't it be less pressure to bring him up on the road? Also, I think he's clear of the super 2 status.

Probably yes, but Orioles fans don't have a lot to look forward to this year. I can't imagine the Orioles not taking advantage of the attendance spike his first series would cause.

On the Super 2, it's close. If he came up now, he might qualify and he might not. Every day they keep him down for the next 2-3 weeks makes it much more likely that he will not qualify.

maybe, but it's easier to start at home and not having to worry about traveling - you can just go and start getting settled in at your new "home." plus it's easier for the big club to help arrange for lodging and tickets for relatives and close friends who are coming to watch the debut.

can someone please explain to me what super 2 status is?

What Players Are Eligible for Arbitration?

A player and club who cannot agree on a contract may agree to salary arbitration, provided that the player has enough service time in the majors. The following players are eligible for arbitration:

(1) Players with at least 3 but less than 6 years of service in Major League Baseball;

(2) The top 17 percent of players with at least 2 but less than 3 years of Major League service. These are known as “Super 2” players. To qualify as a Super 2, a player must have accumulated at least 86 days of service in the previous year. Historically, the cutoff point for Super 2 status is 2 years, 128 days of service, though the requirement has been as high as 2 years, 140 days in years past.

Yeah - it's your ML debut. You're likely going to feel a ton of pressure no matter where you are. At least at home there is some comfort in having it easier for friends/family to attend and the crowd will be wildly supportive (at least for the first couple ABs).

It's the top 17% (in terms of service time) of players with more than 2 but less than 3 years. For example, if in a given year there are 100 players with between 2 and 3 years, the 17 of those with the most service time are the super 2's. The significance is that super 2's are eligible for arbitration along with players with at least 3 full years of service.

In addition to what the others have said, essentially it's a money difference. A normal player that is there from the start of the year goes like this (if they have no long-term contract signed):

year 1-major league minimum

year 2-tiny raise

year 3-tiny raise

year 4-arbitration year 1. This is where a player can finally start getting some significant raises instead of just making very close to major league minimum.

year 5-arbitration year 2. A decent player usually receives a modest raise here.

year 6-arbitration year 3-the rules for arbitration change in this year, so sometimes big raises can happen here.

Year 7-free agency

In the case of a Super 2, it goes like this:

partial year (pro-rated minimum)

year 1-tiny raise

year 2-tiny raise

year 3-Arbitration year 1

year 4-Arbitration year 2

year 5-Arbitration year 3

year 6-Arbitration year 4

Year 7-free agency

It can be hard to convince an arbiter of too big of a raise from year to year. So it's highly beneficial to a player to have 4 arbitration years. Not only do they get into the 7 figures a year earlier, but they also have more time to build the raises incrementally, making that 3rd and 4th years of arbitration monster salary figures.

A person brought up during the year who is not a Super 2 will have the same chart except their third full year will also be close to major league minimum and then they will have 3 full years of arbitration instead of 4.

Basically, their decision to not bring up Wieters for another couple weeks could save the Orioles somewhere between 8-15 million dollars over the next 6 1/2 years.

Just found this...

This just in: Wieters arrives Friday!

Orioles president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail dropped a surprise on Orioles fans during the MASN broadcast a few minutes ago, announcing that top prospect Matt Wieters will be recalled and make his major league debut on Friday against the Detroit Tigers at Camden Yards.

"It's time,'' MacPhail said. "He's ready."

The decision comes as a bit of a shock, since Orioles officials have been saying privately for some time that Wieters would come up either next Monday in Seattle or on June 9 in Baltimore.

Guess that answers that

So are there any updated projections for Weiters? Now that he is up a little later than expect and wasn't tearing the cover off the ball in the minors.

Wieters has a .299/.367/.552 line in May, with a .382 wOBP (according to firstinning.com). Firstinning has him at a .362 wOBA for the year, but statcorner has him at .383; I guess statcorner's formula is different. Regardless, he has improved during the month of May. His IsoP is up .153 (.100 in April, .253 in May), and his strikeout rate is down almost 15% (25% in April, 10.2% in May). He obviously isn't posting a wOBA of .452 like he did last year, but I think he will be a very serviceable catcher for the Orioles the remainder of this season, and much better next year.

im really smart and I picked up Weiters 2 days ago in a ten team 5x5, but I already have Brian McCann. My Util at the moment is Milton Bradley, but I have Manny on the bench until he gets back. So..

1) Keep both Weiters and McCann and put one in the util spot.

2) Trade McCann

3) Trade Wieters

There are a couple teams that would probably take either. In my opinion I have the best team in the league as currently constructed, so what should I do here?

Trade Wieters. Someone in your league surely expects him to hit like Manny did for the Dodgers last season. Shop him and get max value. Heck, I might trade Wieters for a stud player and a league average C just to maximize on the hype. Unless it's a keeper league, I'd be shopping him pretty hard. 10 teams? Surely someone will overpay greatly.

I'm in the exact same boat, I've got McCann and Wieters. My league is pretty dead tradewise though. I don't think there have been any completed trades. I've made multiple trade offers throughout the year and all have been declined with no counter offer. Teams that are already four games out (it's h2h) aren't dealing! It's a keeper league. Is Wieters the kind of guy you keep around at the end of the year? I mean, a catcher? Considering they don't go in the early rounds. I'll likely have to wait for Wieters to produce for a few weeks before even shopping him. There are guys starting garbage catchers too. Playing him at Util may be an option but I've got Prince Fielder/Carlos Pena at 1B/Utility so he would have to displace McCann at Catcher or Pena/Fielder at Util for me to even use him at this point.

I have McCann and Weiters too! I also have Inge (eligible at C in Yahoo). For whatever reason, people in my league aren't getting into the Weiters hype, so i'm going to sell high on McCann since I also have Inge who is rock solid in case Weiters struggles.
