We Believe Film Premiere

June 12, 2009 at The Chicago Theatre

Just wondering if anyone heard of this

From the Director of The US VS. John Lennon, comes We Believe a smart, thought-provoking, uplifting and passionate documentary set against the 2008 baseball season and the 100th anniversary of the last Chicago Cubs World Series win.

We Believe explores and reveals the character, spirit and soul of the city and why its people have rooted for the Chicago Cubs so passionately and for so long with mixed emotions.

As the first theatrical documentary to be fully authorized by the Cubs and is produced with full cooperation by Major League Baseball, the film features entertaining and compelling interviews with current Cubs and management including (Ernie Banks, Ryan Dempster and Derek Lee,) former Cubs stars and a distinguished roster of journalists and authors (Bob Costas, George Will,) cultural commentators and politicians(Mayor Richard M. Daley,) as well as stars from the worlds of film, TV and music (Hugh Hefner, Bonnie Hunt, Joe Mantegna, Billy Corgan) who maintain a passion for the team and the city.

The interviews featured in the film will speak to America, Chicago, baseball, the Cubs and themes of loyalty, tradition, hope, disappointment, heart, optimism and faith.

That's cool, but I'm sick of movies about the Cubs futility and the eternal hope of Cubs fans being made. I would bet the fans are sick of it too. I saw Chasing October (documentary following the 2003 season) and I just wanted to punch everyone in the theater and myself thinking about what might have been. I suspect this movie will do the same.

The only way I'll see this is during a 7+ game winning streak where my Cub angst is low.

I hate these movies.

Quite sure there will be the token:

1) Guy who talks about wanting the Cubs to win before his poor old grandfather dies who has never seen a world series championship.

2) Dufus who is unsure if the wants the Cubs to win because then they would lose their special bond with the fans who have suffered with them through all the years.

I guess it is cute for people that don't really follow baseball but to me they always seem to focus on people that I would never want to identify with as fellow Cubs fans.

I remember being excited for the HBO special. I was waiting all week for it and by the time it was over I was depressed. Off the top of my head Im pretty sure that there's no Cubs movie, save for maybe Rookie of the Year, that has a happy ending whether it be a fiction movie or a documentary.

They may be informative and bring back some memories, but in the end the Cubs always lose... and I don't like being reminded of that, especially since they never do it in a positive light, always a dramatic, sad, miserable tone. I hate that

I know it's got him not making the hall and the '03 debacle in there, but I remember (haven't seen it in awhile) This Old Cub ending perhaps with his number retirement and being a decently happy ending.
