How committed is Ricketts to building the farm system?

Bruce Levine

According to the people I talk to, Ricketts will tell his baseball people at the Cubs organization meetings next Wednesday that the minor-league system is his No. 1 priority.

That is great news. Of course, what really matters is how he plans to make it the top priority. If the approach is the right one, and he properly invests, it could have huge effects. Might take a few years to see the results, but I'm happy to hear it.

I don’t know if this has been posted already – but here is nice video with the whole Ricketts clan talking about their vision for the team. I’m struck by how down to earth these people are. I’m trying not to get too excited, but . . .

Nice video.

They look happy and excited, can't keep from smiling, just like any of us would look if we'd just managed to buy our favorite team.

I loved this quote, "For us, hope is just not a strategy anymore." Said winning a championship was the #1 priority and the Red Sox was a good franchise model.

I think if you read between the lines, they have some pretty big plans for Wrigley.

Sounds like Lou will be back as manager if Lou wants to be back as manager.

I wish he would have given a timeline on that goal of winning the World Series.

Why? You can't just decide you want to win a World Series. And any timeline would be a meaningless date. They could win it next year, or not win for several.

Damn. He's getting my hopes up. Bastard.

I know. This is going to be a very compelling offseason.

He hasn't said much in the way of his plans for personnel, though, both in the front office and in the dugout.

It's more a long term thing. I doubt you'll see anything major this offseason, outside of the obvious stuff that we know is coming.

Interesting quote:

Hendry's job is safe, at least for the time being.

"Jim is obviously under contract, but we like Jim and want to give him the opportunity to bring us a winner in 2010," Tom Ricketts said.

Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but that sounds like they expect Hendry to do well this year or he's gone.

Good catch. Give him a chance in 2010. It made sense all along that they would give the incumbents a season whenever they finally did get the job. I'd cut the guy lose today, but I understand a new owner wanting to wait on that move.

"there is no multiple agenda"

"think long term" "our shareholders are our fans"

seems like he has real long term plans, he seems like he is very goal orientated.

"improving restrooms" lol

"real strat to save Wrigley" "a year to do all the planning" "4,5,6,7 years from now finish"

man, why are all the questions about wrigley? i want to know about the dang team.

wtf is the triangle parcel?

"there is no magic bullet" "only way to do it is to draft and develop the right players and coach them through the system and give the general manager (a consistent edge)"

GOOD!

stop it with the facilities. more about the actual team

"world class training facilities. they are for developing players and" we need to have the best facilities to develop players, looking at options with an open mind

"slight increases on both payroll and ticket prices"

"we believe (developing players) is the key. since looking into (buying the team) we have always budgeted extra money for that area, as any real fan knows" that's what's most important

he seems legit about player development. he is on point, sounds like he has his ground covered, and is not balking, for even a second or an uhm, at any questions

PSLs?

"super excited to start the bigger decisions"

going to add ads where it's not in the way to advert from fans experience

kaplan is already brown-nosing. what a schmuck

"i can't imagine anyone that comes to a lot of games won't see me" there, or my family

"strongly believe (lou) is one of the best managers in baseball"

"there are proposals that have required the team to leave wrigley for a couple years, but" they will not consider those.

"team is understaffed. if we are going to have the best franchise in baseball... we may need to supplement that"

"no discussions on naming rights, haven't really considered it" thinking about options for ways around naming rights to keep it wrigley but gain more revenue for the team

ricketts is a funny dude. sound was messing up, his sister was talking and he said "you were saying something nice about me, here take this mic"

"i think we have a team that can do it next year. not going to promise anything, but there is enough talent on this team to go all the way. key is to each season is to look at themselves and be sincere about it and be able to say that"

"we intend to be owners of this team for generations" more concerned about how to win on the field than anything else (question about if the team is an investment, making money)

It is good to hear that he plans on improving the stadium without having the Cubs play a season somewhere else.

Or is that just his way of saying that Hendry spent the team into the poorhouse and dont expect any free agents any time soon.
