That article(like most regarding Big Ten expansion) is pretty much garbage. Ooooh, let's add Rutgers, Syracuse, and Iowa St. That way we can have an unwieldly conference with 3 new terrible teams.

Yeah telling Notre Dame that Purdue, MSU, and UM won't play them anymore certainly will force them to lose money by joining the Big Ten. Notre Dame does usually have a hard time finding opponents so this makes sense.

I think his point about having the long layoff before bowl season is valid. I also agree that the Big Ten is not as good as they think they are, and that in general, their clinging to tradition hampers their ability to keep up with the Joneses

I would like to think that having a 12th team and playing a championship game would have saved us the embarrassment of seeing OSU get beat down in consecutive BCS title games.

And that's fine, if that's all they're interested in, they can play a schedules like the PAC 10 going into the first week of December. The conference title game is a cash grab. Missouri's the only team listed in that article that would make the slightest bit of sense. The conference title game is the only "benefit" to adding a team. Adding multiple teams would be crazy, and will never happen.

I highly doubt there will ever be a 12th Big Ten team added. It is way too difficult to find a fit geographically, academically, and athletically. A list of possible options are ND, Louisville, Mizzou, Iowa St., Rutgers, or Syracuse. Of these institutions I think that ND is the only one that really fits all three levels, and they are never joining the Big Ten.

I am worried about OSU making it to the Title game again just because I don't think any teams make it out of the Big XII, SEC, or Pac-10 undefeated. Hopefully USC takes them down in Columbus this year. Christ am I actually going to be cheering for USC ](*,) ?

You think if OSU goes undefeated in the Big Ten with a noncon win over USC that they wouldn't belong in the title game?

I think that it could be argued that if all 6 BCS conferences had a title game, it would be the second best thing to an actual playoff

I think Pittsburgh would make sense, and would renew an old rivalry with PSU

Agreed, but I can't see Pitt leaving the Big East in basketball.

I agree with Paterno. As long as this current system is in place, the Big Ten either needs to just say that we are an academic conference and get out of the BCS or they need to start to play the game at the same level as some of the other BCS conferences. This includes scheduling, adding teams that may not fit the current Big Ten academic criteria, and lowering the current academic standards to that of some of the other major conferences. Truth be told the only thing that will change the Big Ten is when it becomes a financial issue. If they keep managing to get 2 teams in the BCS every year there probably isnt much reason to change.

I think the ultimate solution is if the NCAA is going to endorse a National Championship system that isnt done in tournament format, they need to start controlling scheduling more so everyone is on an equal footing.

I think there's a whole lot of recency bias going on here from people claiming the Big Ten can't compete with other conferences. It's cyclical, every conference goes through down and up periods.

This is also using tunnel vision by only thinking about football. The conference everyone's thinking about when saying add a school, lower your standards, etc. is the SEC. Look at what garbage that conference was in basketball this year. Does the SEC need to lower their standards(HA!) or add 8 more teams because they've been a poor basketball conference the last 2 seasons? Absolutely not. They need to wait 2 years and see themselves back as a good conference.

The Big Ten needs to add 1 team and add a conference championship.

It would be nice if the Big East added 4 teams and the Pac 10 added two for consistency's sake, but I'm not holding my breath

Why?

Conf. Championship gets you extra practice time for your players and shortens the gap between the regular and bowl seasons.

You need to add the team to get the conf. championship

Doesnt seem to bother USC year in and year out and the Pac10 did well this year in their bowl games.

How's this for expansion. Have ever B10 team play each other instead of just 8. This will get rid of some of those OOC clunkers.

Yes, 2 OOC games and 10 conference games would be much better, I agree

Or they could schedule interesting OOC games.

Big Ten teams(like other BCS teams) have little incentive to schedule a monster OOC. Take your 1 BCS opponent, 1 middling MAC/C-USA/WAC team, 1 Sun Belt team, and 1 1-AA team. It's the standard BCS schedule.

Yeah, but that only works if your BCS opponent is someone with a pulse.

I just don't see the benefit in the current system to playing a team with a pulse. It sucks, but there's just not much to gain there.
