Z's bullpen session today went well.

 

Cubs.com[/b]"] Cubs pitcher Carlos Zambrano had his first bullpen session on Wednesday since he strained his left hamstring on May 3, and all went well. The next step will be a Minor League rehab assignment this weekend in the Florida State League.

 

Cubs manager Lou Piniella called Zambrano's outing "encouraging." Zambrano injured his leg running to first base, and he will test it doing baserunning drills on Thursday.

 

The right-hander is expected to join the Cubs' Class A Daytona team and pitch either Saturday or Sunday. Daytona plays at Clearwater from Thursday through Saturday, and at Dunedin from Sunday through Tuesday.

 

"With Zambrano, the news was good," Piniella said. "We've got him scheduled for San Diego next Friday [May 22]."

Zambrano is scheduled to pitch a rehab start for Class-A Daytona on Sunday. Cubs manager Lou Piniella said if the rehab start goes well he expects him to start Friday at San Diego.
