For what its worth, if anything, Channel 5 news just reported that Randy Wells will be called up to replace Zambrano, but does that mean the Scales will be called up for now and they'll deal with that on Friday?
That's exactly what it means. Since Wells won't pitch until Friday he doesn't need to be called up before then and basically waste a roster spot for a few days. So they decided to go with an extra position player until then, and on Friday someone (probably Scales or Gathright) will go to make room for Wells on the roster.

Plus, frankly, that was a perfect bunt.

Not bad for a guy who only recently claimed he wasn't aware there was such a thing as a bunt sign. :-))

It seems to me it might be an opportunity to give Theriot a day off.

Why on earth do you want to give Theriot a day off now? 3 HR's in 4 games? Let the guy play while he's hot.

Hopefully, they'll at least give Scales a chance to prove that he can do the job.

I don't know, but Lou said he was probably going to get today off. Then he said they would give multiple guys a day off, so maybe that was him catching himself about Theriot.

Wasn't Dusty Baker the king of giving guys off days in the middle of hot streaks or is that my hatred for the guy warping my memories?

That was Dusty all right. I remember jokes on this board about Dusty giving a player a day off as a reward for a good game.

Baylor did it too.

I remember Corey Patterson being on one of his streaks of not sucking, and he had a decent hit streak going and Dusty not only gave him a day off but pinch hit him late in the game to only give him 1 shot and continuing his hit streak.

Here's the obligatory ESPN article for a player who finally got his callup @ 31:

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=4140809

I don't know. I kind of like the story too. Heck, Scales was on WSCR this morning and I was feeling pretty good for the guy. He plays baseball @ AAA in the Summer, then teaches part time in the offseason. Finally gets a cup of coffee in the majors after 11 years. He said he hung around Wrigley for hours before and after the game, just took it all in.

It's a cool story, something to smile about for a little bit. Even if he will be sent back down soon.

It's probably all he'll ever get. I'd be doing the same thing. Dude is livin' the dream right now, and I say more power to him.

Yep; there were also people posting at the time that Baylor and Baker were basically the same manager.

i was thinking there is/was a good chance that Scales might stay for a while and Gathright might get the boot on Friday. now with Lee's neck flairing up again, i wonder if they may decide to call up J. Fox and drop both Gathright and Scales.

Given Piniella's hatred for Fox and the existence of Hoffpauir I doubt they'd callup Fox. Gathright absolutely has to go. IF they decide later that they want a speedy guy to play CF once a month that can't hit at all they still have Sam Fuld at AAA.

Did Piniella say something that indicates he hates Fox, or is that just speculation?

I'm pretty sure it goes back to that incident at the end of 2007 when Fox missed a sign or swung away at the first pitch after the pitcher had walked a couple guys. Something along those lines, and then he got like 2 more ABs the rest of September or maybe even got sent back to Iowa.

The way I remember it, Piniella had talked to Fox about being more patient before the game. Fox goes up and is 1st pitch hacking in all 3 ABs. Piniella reportedly saw this as an act of defiance.

Fox might not have made another appearance the rest of the way. Piniella's doghouse is a place few escape from unless they are lucky enough to be traded.

Yeah, on the other hand, if your MLB manager asks you to be more patient and then you respond by first-pitch hacking 3 straight times, you're an idiot.

Maybe Lou said something more vague like "Wait for a good pitch to hit" and Fox got 3 first pitch fastballs.

Keep in mind though that MLB players are widely considered the dumbest of all professional athletes.

jesus, i hope lou isn't really stupid enough to make decisions that way.

I really don't know if that is what happened. I'm just saying, it would be wise to rethink a strategy of "i'll completely ignore what my boss is saying" at work. It generally isn't a good idea.

IF that is what happened.
