Cubs Bobby Crosby Rumor

By Tim Dierkes [March 4 at 11:41am CST]

According to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle:

Shortstop Bobby Crosby becomes the A's backup middle infielder with the Orlando Cabrera acquisition, but there could be some interest in him before the spring is over - including from the Cubs, according to one source. One of Chicago's top scouts was watching Tuesday's game and is known to have been a fan of Crosby in the past.

The biggest hurdle for a Crosby trade, of course, is the $5.25MM owed to him in 2009. I spoke to a source familiar with the Cubs' thinking, and he said there's "nothing to it." He said the Cubs scout was watching the A's as part of general coverage of all teams.

hopefully by "the past" he means "three or four years ago"

Or, it could be that the Cubs were simply doing regular ST scouting of two teams

If we wanted an offensively inept backup middle infielder, we never should have parted with Ronny Cedeno, or Cesar Izturis or Jose Macias or Neifi Perez or Rey Ordonez.
Damian Jackson and Enrique Wilson say hi.

Wasn't it 3-4 years ago when Peter Gammons picked Crosby to win the AL MVP?

pointless fighting with each other aside, there's really no reason to get crosby. he can't hit, he's injury-prone and he doesn't even offer platoon opportunities with our current shortshop, who's way better than most shortstops in the league.

What's more overused on here, the lefthanded comments or the sarcastic overreactions to seemingly unalarming injury news?

I'll go with your responses to the lefthanded comments and the sarcastic overreactions to seemingly unalarming injury news.

I remember when Peter Gammons predicted that Bobby Crosby would win the AL MVP. Ha!

I actually think that was Buster Olney.

olney may have done so as well, but Gammons certainly did. I think it was '06.

MLB Network had a crawl that said Crosby has asked for a trade to a team that needs a starting SS. Luckily, that's not us. Crosby is one guy who I would take Theriot over

Cubs Vizcaino to Oakland?

The Cubs' chances of trading Luis Vizcaino are slim because of the overpriced contract, though if they packaged him with a prospect, they could explore a deal with Oakland for shortstop Bobby Crosby, who makes $5.25 million and is being shopped after Orlando Cabrera signed. -- Chicago Tribune

I don't see why the A's would like a bum like Vizcaino but I would like to see this trade take place.

Two reasons:

1. They have 1 SS too many.

2. We have better options for the bullpen.

They would be trading 1 high-priced bum for another plus they get a prospect. Hopefully it would be a low-level prospect.

Just saw on MLBTR:

Speaking of Crosby, Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune wonders if the Cubs could work out a deal involving reliever Luis Vizcaino. Despite the $4MM owed to Vizcaino, he's not a lock for the Cubs' bullpen. We learned last week that the Cubs do not appear interested in Crosby.

Yes, but they probably have better options in the bullpen too. I wouldn't be surprised to find out that some team who has SS needs might value Crosby. I just don't see th A's pursuing a Viz for Crosby swap.

so we're going to trade a guy we don't want for another guy we don't want.
That's basically what the Cubs did when they traded Marquis for Vizcaino in the first place.

True. I should've said "so we're going to trade a guy we don't want who has no use for another guy we don't want who has no use."
