Chicago Cubs

Signed: C Mario Mercedes

Released: RHP Bubba O’Donnell, OF TeWayne Willis

Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Justin Berg, C Mario Mercedes, OF Doug Deeds

Reinstated from DL: C Michael Brenly, SS Matt Matulia, OF Jason Dubois

http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/prospects/?p=3538

This has to be a week old, since Deeds was reinstated from the DL today.

BA's transcations cover a 7-14 day period. It doesn't include the recent reinstatement of Deeds and the DL'ing of Luis Rivas. The interesting part for me was the release of O'Donnell and Willis (not surprising, but interesting).

Richie Robnett and Jesse Estrada.

Like good magicians, the Cubs made Michael Wuertz disappear into thin air. Chicago dealt the righthanded reliever, who’s doing fine in Oakland, thank you, to the Athletics in the February trade for middle infielder Justin Sellers and outfielder Richie Robnett. Sellers the Cubs simply dumped on the Dodgers for minimal compensation, while Robnett they recently flat-out released.

Hendry is awesome.

Of all the Cubs moves this offseason, this is the one what really puzzles me the most. I know that Lou really didn't care for Wuertz all that much for some reason, but the guy has been a real solid reliever since he reached the bigs.

It's been mentioned elsewhere in the past week but it's worth noting again:

wasn't he signed for something like 700k? what a gigantic mistake. he never even played like a good prospect.

He got an overslot bonus of $155,000 as a 9th rounder in 2006.

hey, maybe i missed it somewhere, but what exactly was the story behind whatever happened to jordan latham? That one was very surprising early in the year, imo moreso than acosta as latham was coming off a real solid season. Look at the way Blake Parker flourished this year ... I didn't think the two were that far apart in ability (and part of me was still curious about Latham as a starter).

I agree. With Acosta, there were rumblings about personal issues or disciplinary problems.

There was nothing mentioned with Latham and he was coming off a really strong season last year. Unlike Cedric Redmond, he was able to stay healthy too.

What was strange about the whole Latham scenario was that ... he was released, then he wasn't, then he was, then I stopped following. Without any indication/information at all, I wonder if this was a personal situation on his end, perhaps Greinke-esque? Taking a wild stab, so fully acknowledging that it is a wild stab.
