I have honestly never been LESS excited about spring training. I really don't even care.

Stupid cubs.

I don't understand this at all. The Cubs are clearly the best team in the division. They've even added distance between them and the next best team. How can you not be excited? This team on paper is better than last's years team at this point.

because outside of the 5th starter spot, there isn't much to pay attention to. Spring Training is 3x longer than it needs to be, and it's hard to get excited about baseball until we're a lot closer to the season.

That's not at all what he said.

I wasn't speaking for him.

Who cares if it's 3 times too long? What are you going to do start the season in mid-March? I am a baseball fanatic. When baseball is on, I am watching. When the offseason arrives, I fall into a cocoon and hibernate with lesser sports like football and basketball to get me by. By early February, I am dying to get any glimpse of my summer warriors on a baseball field. You could start Spring Training on November 1st and I would be fine with it.

I forgot to check Cubsaz.com. He's got some pictures from yesterday as several players including Geo, Gathright, Koyie Hill, Guzman, Gaudin, Fox worked out. I have tremendous respect for his blog and his exclusive pictures, so I am not going to post them all, but hopefully it will be alright to post one as a teaser.

He looks like he did. He was getting pretty chunky at the end of last year.

Here he was in the playoff last year (warning, bad memories ahead):

I realize I am just showing pictures of his ass, but that's the best I can find (sadly the only Geo NLDS pictures you can find are where the Dodgers players are scoring yet another run :( ), and he definitely looks beefier.

geo's sporting a kanye haircut!

Not exactly a flattering picture. He has gone from rookie to 40 year old veteran all in one offseason!

Or he traveled back to 1991 to go to the barber

Yeah, I'm sure not seeing that. It is better relative to the rest of the division, for what that's worth.

Last year's team at this point had Pie in CF and Fuku in RF, and didn't have Rich Harden. This year's has Rich Harden, Bradley in RF and Fuk in CF. Granted, DeRosa gets most of his AB's replaced by Fontenot and there's no Wood, but I'd still take this team with Bradley and Harden over the one we opened with last year.

The team performed a lot better than you would've expected at this time last year due largely in part to Edmonds (granted, nobody expected Fukudome to tank that badly) and Dempster. As for Dempster this year, I'm clueless as to what to expect, but hopefully he keeps it up.

I guess at this time last year most expected Dempster to mediocre/bad, so between modified expectation and Harden, the rotation looks a lot better. The outfield looks better offensively. The middle infield looks worse, but I don't think Fontenot will produce much less than what we expected DeRosa to last season. The bullpen looks worse, but we weren't really sure what we were going to get out of Wood.

So I guess if we look at the team knowing what we know now, it looks worse. But I feel better than I did last year at the same time.

Actually I heard an interesting story that CC almost quit baseball when he was younger because his dad assumed he was right handed. I can't remember where I heard it, but I'm pretty sure I'm not making it up.

What's the point of comparing this team to the opening day team of 2008 when the team was way different at the end of the season? We all thought they were like an 85-90 win team at the beginning of the season last year. We should be comparing this team to the team that actually ended up existing...which is the 97 win team.

The point is that he said we're better on paper than last year's at this point. His idea was that you shouldn't be any less excited about spring training given that. It's pretty much the best team we've gone into ST with on paper since maybe 04.

Granted, that doesn't take into account the role that the playoff disappointment and the disappointment of losing two fan favorites (who also happened to be pretty good players) and the fact that this team is probably not as good as the one we finished last season with, but I thought he made a decent point.

All that said, I am no less excited for this year than I am for any other year. I love this.

Yeah I didn't see the "at this point" of his post until after I posted it. I deleted my pst but you must have already been replying to it before I deleted it. My fault.

Also, there are some quotes from Lou at this link. His key quote is "We're going to get it done", of course referring to the World Series drought.

I've pretty much hated baseball for the last four months, but Carlos with an absurd mustache sucks me back in.
