Ward could actually be a pretty good signing for them if Dusty wouldn't give him a ton of playing time. But it is Dusty we're talking about, so . . .

I don't know how Jones has a spot on the team. Don't the Reds have good outfield depth too?

Overweight guy known best for his pinch hitting roles, yep this sounds like Lenny Harris all over again. He'll get way too many starts this year.

Oh yeah, I'm sure he will. Just saying if Dusty used him right, there's a chance he could revert back to 07 Ward.

I don't think very many people are ever going to be able to be 07 Ward, including Ward himself.

People forget how damn good he was in 2007.

Yeah, you're probably right about that. Even if he could replicate 06 or close to it, he'd be a very valuable member of the Reds' bench.

That's the beauty of a pinch hitter like Ward, as long as the skills aren't diminishing, there's always the possibility of getting hot for a few ABs and being highly productive.

... the Reds signed Jacque Jones and Daryle Ward to minor league deals today.

If you disregard the Dusty factor, these seem like two no-risk signings for the Reds.

I think quite a lot of teams will have a couple of MLB vets as NRI's in spring training; it seems to be part of everyone's annual "you never know..." routine.

Yeah, I don't think either is a bad signing on the face of it. The problems start when you consider Dusty is the manager.

Ward will start every Sunday when Dusty sports his forefit lineup.

Gawd that use to piss me off.

Exactly why these signings - which on the face of it are pretty good - will likely turn very, very bad for Reds fans.

not only start every Sunday, but start in the exact batting slot as the regular he's replacing (so probably batting 3rd in place of Votto).

Dusty put Jacque Jones in at first base yesterday. Here's hoping that Dusty uses Jones there some when the season begins, pushing Joey Votto to the bench. :-))

i'm absolutely loving this stuff with a friend of mine who is a huge Reds fan. he's still in denial, which is fantastic. though what it really is, he just thinks they can win in spite of Dusty because of Jocketty. he recently uttered the phrase, "We're building a dynasty in Cincinnati." it was one of the single funniest things I've ever heard.

he went on to claim, "Jocketty already said no more Corey Patterson type deals." when i laughed and brought up Jones it was, "Doesn't matter, he won't make the team." when i brought up that i heard Volquez and Cueto are both pitching in the WBC, he was damn near tears.

hahahaha........poor guy.

unfortunately, each of these conversations turns into him repeating "1908" until i stop.
