I remember when we signed him and people were saying it was an awful move and that Schmidt and Zito would be such better options. Lilly has been worth every penny we have paid him the last two seasons and next to DeRosa I think he is the best FA signing Hendry has made.

Thats why people should think back and remember stuff like that, and give Hendry more of the benefit of the doubt on some of this seasons offseason moves.

I'll agree with you on Schmidt, but I don't think anyone advocated signing Zito. It was clear to everyone but Brian Sabean that he was on the decline

Plenty of people wanted Zito (though you're right in saying Schmidt was the popular option).

Alot of people still wanted Vincente Padilla, Jason Jennings and Jake Westbrook. Adding one of those guys would have been a big mistake. Hendry wanted both Lilly and Meche that offseason, how great would it be right now if he end up with both. One interesting from reading that old thread is. There are a few people who wanted the Cubs to add Aaron Heilman.

Meche and Lilly please

I was also into Westbrook a bit. He just got hurt. I also liked Cliff Lee.

the biggest thing that scared me about schmidt was the Pitcher Abuse Points - i remember him throwing 140 pitches against the cubs like 3 months after minor elbow surgery. felipe alou rode him hard and he'd had some elbow problems in the past; that was the biggest negative about him.

meche i was very opposed to, but he's all right. not a guy i'd like to hand 5 years and $55M to, however.

Didn't the Cubs have something like 4y at 36m offer on the table for Meche? I recall the Blue Jays having something like 4y at 40m offer on the table, and the Royals had a 4y at 44m deal on the table. Meche was deciding between the three teams, and many thought he was leaning towards the Cubs. Then the Royals added that 5th year to steal him away. I recall wanting Lilly alot, and at the time I liked Meche better then the other free agents on the market. I think after that the best free agent pitchers on the market were Jeff Suppan and Jason Marquis, and the Cubs went with Marquis. I will admit I liked the idea of signing Schmidt and Westbrook, but wasn't a fan of Padilla, or Jennings. That was a pretty weak year for SP free agents it seemed. Overall it seemed like Hendry had the right game plan, when you figure he went after Lilly, Meche and Marquis, who probably were the three best deals made for pitchers that offseason.

And guaranteed us Marquis would have ERAs in the 6s.
