Tommie Harris jumps into Urlacher-Cutler fray

Posted by Mike Florio on July 29, 2009 3:03 PM ET

Man, we love Twitter.

We still hate the name, but we love the technology. It provides an instant line of communication between NFL players, fans, and the media, putting everyone in the same computerized room and allowing any two or more of them to have a conversation.

We've had some entertaining banter today with Bengals receiver Chad Ochocinco (whom we find to be extremely entertaining and we wish him only the best this year . . . and we mean that even though it sounds sarcastic), and we just realized that Bears defensive tackle Tommie Harris has sent us a "tweet," too.

Regarding the contention by Vikings receiver Bobby Wade that Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher said during the offseason that new Chicago quarterback Jay Cutler is a "[expletive]," Harris had this to say: "[urlacher] didn't say that u guys are full of it and tell bobby wade will see about that....."

Look, all we're doing is reporting what Wade said on the air. So even if some dude who uses his best contemplative senior picture (he should have stuck with the "ninth grade dorky smile mom plastered down my hair with a handful of spit" pose) at the Chicago Sun-Times thinks that it's not newsworthy, it was -- and it is.

Especially if it's true.

Whether it is or isn't true doesn't matter for now. The point is that a member of the Vikings offense said that the leader of the Bears defense said something extremely unflattering about the new leader of the Bears offense.

And if anyone doesn't think that's sufficiently intriguing to be mentioned, we recommend that you apply for a job in ESPN's "which civil lawsuits involving pro athletes should we ignore" department.

``Oh please. I don't think I would ever say that about one of my teammates," Urlacher told the Tribune. ``Look, Bobby Wade's a friend of mine. He's trying to get things going before training camp. That's just Bobby being Bobby. I'm pretty sure Jay knows I wouldn't say that about him."

Wade called Urlacher Wednesday afternoon to apologize and told Urlacher he would call coach Lovie Smith to clarify if necessary.

Urlacher also was humored by aWSCR-AM report that he had to be restrained from going after Cutler during organized team activities.

``I didn't even practice," Urlacher said, referring to a minor groin injury that limited his participation. ``If anything, I called him a few names for zipping balls by my head with that cannon he has. Me having to be restrained? That's funny."

``To tell you the truth, I think it's just stupid," he said. ``I don't really care. I think Jay knows me well enough to know I wouldn't say that. The radio stations that talk about it? I really don't [care] what they said. They are the [wimps]."

I'd recommend listening to the Score for the next hour or two if you're interested in this soap opera.

Apparently there was some kind of altercation where Urlacher confronted Cutler in OTAs or something.

If all of this about tension between the offense and defense is true, I'm sure it'll manifest itself as training camp heats up.

Read the Urlacher quote above. The OTA confrontation didn't happen.

I hate you. I just listened to these idiots say the Cubs should trade Fox for a crappy left handed reliever because there's a chance that guy might get a big out some day.

They're right about his lack of a future in the NL and the fact that you should trade him while his value is high, though (if you can get something worth a damn).

Yea....I'm not exactly buying anything that Brian Urlacher is selling. What else are they gonna do but deny, deny, deny?

That said, I apologize if I'm missing sarcasm here.

Well of course he's going to say it didn't happen. Boers was saying it happened in the locker room and not on the field anyways.

They weren't right about anything. There's no reason he can't have a future on an NL team, or that the Cubs should get what they can right now. If they can't get anything significant for a guy who is hitting great in his first real exposure to major league pitching and holding his own in the field, there's no reason whatsoever to deal him. They are going to turn around and spend 5 times as much on a much lesser bench option.

No sarcasm. I just think it's all BS. Terry Boers is only one that saw this mysterious confrontation? Whatever. And it's only mentioned the day that Bobby Wade makes his comments?

He's a huge liability at whatever position they put him at and they are locked up for at least a few years at the positions where you can hide a bad defender.

I don't feel nearly strongly enough about it to argue about it, though. Meh.

These guys have a history of crap like this. Benson in TC in 07...

I wouldn't put something like this past Urlacher, and I definitely wouldn't believe it didn't happen just because he denied that it happened.

I agree.

FWIW Bernstein is typically one of the most sensible and statistically inclined talk show guys you could find.

I don't know if I'd go as far as to word it that strongly. He's well educated on them, which he makes known now and then, but he's not what you would call a big believer in all of it.

He's a really smart guy, though.

I'm not listening to the show. Who's making the claim that this confrontation happened? Boers or Bernstein?

Benson was a rookie running his mouth. Cutler was a massive trade that hugely upgrades a position. There's a difference between giving a rookie a rough time, and calling out your new star QB. And again, why is the Score the only one that has this story? Nobody but them saw this thing?

Benson wasn't a rookie, FWIW... and he was slated to be the team's #1 RB at the time (it was 2006, btw, I was wrong about 07), IIRC... the injury kept that from happening and Jones took hold of the job and held on. At least, that's how I remember it.

In the world of sports talk radio, anyone who often uses VORP in player analysis is a stathead.

He's really smart and really good for the most part.

I tried listening for a few months a while back, and I wouldn't say he's smart. He's a baseball idiot and a mostly rational football guy, but not smart.

I just like how we're treating the word of Bobby Wade, and single source reporting as though it's infallibly accurate. If it was true, all Urlacher has to say is "Yeah, I was drunk, and playing around. I call a lot of people "[expletive]". I'm a football player."

But whatever. Even if it's all true...it's a non-issue. They're football players that will never be on the field at the same time. Big whoop.
