So I was telling my roommate, who's a Mets fan, about what K-Rod said about the Mets being the favorites in the NL. First let me set the stage by telling you Andy and I have argued multiple times with him about what is the best common stat indicating a pitcher's quality. We say ERA he says wins. Yeah. Anyways here's the conversation

Him: I wish no one would say that kind of thing but its true.

Me: *chuckle* You have to win your division at least one of the last two years to be able to claim that.

Him: The Mets have the most talent and thus are the favorites.

Me: No doubting the Mets are in the top 2 of most talented teams but its up for grabs whether its them or the Cubs. Plus they had all that talent the last two years and got them no where.

Him: *chuckle/scoff* Typical Cub fan and thinking their team is the best. You guys are the worst fans in baseball because you know nothing but think you know everything.

Me: We had the BEST record in MLB last year.

So I'm wondering how many of you agree with him in that the Mets are the favorites.

hmm. they might be favorites in the east (just because i don't think philly is going to get the same production from their bullpen and from moyer), but in the nl? did k rod say they were the favorites in the league? i thought he said division favorites. either way he's dumb considering the fact that he's a reliever. remember last year when they got santana and everyone was all over their nuts in the nl? i guess they don't learn

the next time he gets chesty (which is absrud anyways considering what they've done the past 2 seasons) just ask him aobut the rotation. it looks pretty ugly right now.

Ha, he's right, you don't know anything. The Angels had the best record in the MLB last year.

(jk about not knowing anything, just had to be nitpicky)

Whichever team gets Teixeira (Anaheim or Boston) will probably be my favorite for the AL WS representative next year. From the NL, I dont know how anyone can say the Mets are a favorite of anything, besides most likely to fade away. I'd have to go with either the Cubs or the Phillies at this point.

Anyone going to say the Rays?

Obviously Las Vegas gaming lines are not indicitive of liklihood of winning, rather a mix of that and public opinion. As such, the gaming lines do other a very clear picture as to who the "favorites" are. In which case, you are wrong.

The Cubs are the best team in the NL. Whether they choose to perform that way in the playoffs is a different story.

The Mets probably have the greatest collection of top tier talent in the NL, but they lack certain pieces that seem to add value to the entire team. Do Putz and K-Rod fix that? Maybe, I still question the Mets SP problems. But if you ask me, the Mets are a collection of either stars or scrubs...the Cubs have a more complete roster with more depth to withstand injuries.

I'll worry more about who the favorites are once the season begins and we see just how the Cubs respond to another playoff disappointment.

I think that's an incredibly inacurrate way to describe the Mets. They scored the 2nd most runs in the NL last year and their starters had the 5th best ERA. The bullpen was clearly a huge problem. They aren't just stars and scrubs.

I think all the "favorites" talk is melarky. Who knows how the teams are going to perform.

2008 Tigers?

2008 Rays?

In all fairness, I think some people thought the Rays had a chance to make some noise. Making the world series though, I doubt that. The Tigers terribleness was just unforeseen though. As far as the Cubs go, you would have to say that they are at least one of the three favorites to go along with the Phillies and Mets. We have the best rotation in the NL. Our lineup is pretty solid from top to bottom, and our bullpen isn't bad.

Depends on what they do the rest of the off-season. They need a DH like Giambi or Burrell and at worst a RH'ed platoon partner in RF. If they can get those two things, their offense will be one of the best in MLB espec. with Upton, Crawford performing below expectation and those potential upgrades at DH and RF. They would still need a closer IMO and keep Balfour, Howell, and Wheeler in set-up type roles and whatever Percival gives them is icing on the cake.

They very well could be the favorites if they sign a could of FAs or trade for an OF bat (Hermida would look great in RF).

yes you're right. it's gotta be either the cardinals (they got greene!), astros (they still have towles) or padres (peavy!)

no but seriously, who in the nl has less flaws than the cubs? the nl is still really weak. i don't see who else is better than them right now. both the mets and phillies rotations look pretty weak
