Who besides DeRosa and, to some extent, Harden had career years (plus Edmonds' overachieving for his age)?

Not really fair to call a rookie season a career year for Soto... Although it's fair to say we don't know if we can expect that again until he actually does it. I guess Aramis had a career year in the sense that his approach changed somewhat and he drew more walks, but his overall production wasn't anything out of the ordinary compared to the rest of his recent career.

Theriot? I guess. How sustainable was his BA from last year?

Dempster. Not sure why you "guess" Theriot had a career year, but he did. I don't think everybody had career years, but most guys performed at or above expectations. That's the rare part.

Totally forgot about Dempster. That one is a no-brainer. My bad.

I guess where I was going on Theriot is that I think he might be able to keep that up. It seems like changed his approach and he hit so many singles at the expense of having any kind of power. Like it was by design to some extent. That said, that obviously doesn't mean it's sustainable, but it leads me to believe it might be.

But you're right about it being lucky in itself to have that many players at least meet expectations.

I don't think Theriot is going to maintain his RC single excellence much longer.

we had career years from most of our players

I both agree with this, and am scared by it.

If by most you mean Derosa, Dempster and Theriot then I agree.

um...

.290 .374 .484 .858

that would be our line for everyone who played center field last season. That production is only matched by Carlos Beltran and Grady Sizemore.

On the other hand, I'm guessing our RF production was pretty lackluster, though...

Wait, I'm confused by this thread title, the AL West is freaking stacked.

The Angels completely ran away with it.

A 100 win team and no one else above .500. The comparison is exactly what the OP was trying to compare.

Wow, I had a complete brain fart moment and my mind was thinking of the AL East even though I was reading AL West. Nevermind.
Easy to confuse them. They both have 4 letters ending in "st." :-))

I personally don't see the Cubs running away with the NL Central with what they have on paper right now. I see them winning it but not overpowering the opposition. As it is clear with the adding of a strong left handed bat in the lineup and get Dempster to repeat what he did last year and get Big Z to mature more and pitch with a little more consistancy and we have the brewing of a great team. Will DeRosa have another career year....if he does it will likely be with another team cause I don't see us adding a sure left-handed bat in the lineup without losing him in the process. We can try to sign Bradley or Dunn but in my opinion that's a toss up. Maybe Fukudome will bounce back and add the punch to a degree the Cubs need. Anyway I just hope that before I die I see the Cubs in the World Series and the rate they are going I feel it will be soon.
