If Jeff Moorad is truly buying the Padres, this may all be moot. They may not need to slice payroll as much.

He said his buying of the team would have no affect on Peavy

David Kaplan on CTL said he believes the 3 prospects the Cubs got in the DeRosa deal are enough to land Peavy and he thinks they are just waiting for the new owner to sign off on it.

I believe it. I can see it happening actually. Why else trade DeRo for 3 scrub pitchers we have no use for? I think it was more than just a salary dump.

Those three alone for Peavy? Really?

Those three plus something. Otherwise you're inferring that Peavy is equal to DeRosa's value.

I think those three pitchers fit the "young pitching" requirement set by Towers, but you'd still need Pie and Cedeno and/or Marshall at the very least.

You pretty much answered your own question.

If anything, the DeRosa trade probably makes a Peavy trade less likely, since we now can't deal him for something the Padres would actually want.

Bruce Miles said they haven't been having conversations about Peavy, and if that's true then it's pretty obvious the DeRosa trade had nothing to do with it. Well, it was already obvious, not it's just more obvious.

That's what I was thinking. The thing he put made it seem like those three for Peavy, which is extremely ridiculous.

Makes sense now.

I should have specified those 3 pitchers as pieces to the Peavy trade. But those were the pieces that might have been missing the first time around.

Pie and Cedeno? More like Vitters, Pie, and Cedeno.

Why are we forgetting that the reason Jim walked away in the first place was because Towers demands were so high? The 3 prospects we got for DeRosa are mediocre. Were any of them even top 15 prospects in their system? Towers wants good pithcing prospects. Not mediocre relief pitching prospects.

If it was true that the trade would have been something like Vitters, Pie (to somebody else), Marshall, Guzman, and DeRosa (to somebody else), then how is a package of Pie/Cedeno/Stevens/Gaub/Archer is uddenly going to be a good starting point?

But there was nothing missing. Towers set a package of ewhat he would trade Peavy for, and hendry declined it. Why are we acting like 3 mediocre-to-below-average pitching prospects were what's missing, when he could have gotten just as much, if not more, than that for DeRosa in the first place?

The reason we didn't get Peavy is not because hendry didn't have the pieces, it's because Towers was asking too much, even WITH DeRosa involing a 3rd or even 4th team. Nothing has changed there.

I think people really want the DeRosa trade to be part of it ansd they're trying to talk themsleves into it. When you put all the pieces together, it just doesn't sound very likely at all.

One thing I have disliked about this website for quite some time now is that it seems that the "Attack the argument, not the poster" rule has seemingly been long since forgotten.

Pretty sure he's Voice of Reason is just joking. I'll ban him if you want though.

Hendry and Towers did nothing but talk for weeks about this deal. Hendry knows what Towers wants. Hendry generally keeps trade talks close to the vest. This time around there gonna be quite about it. Makes sense the good Bruce hasn't heard anything. Once Marquis is officially gone , and the new owner is in place. I am a firm believer that Peavy will be a Cub and those three pitchers we got for Derosa will play a role one way or another.

Bruce never said he hasn't heard anything. He said they haven't been talking Peavy. If he hadn't heard anything, he'd say he didn't know.

Of course one or more of those pitchers could end up being involved in a Peavy trade, but even if they are, I highly doubt that that had anything to do with the trade. He would have made that trade whether he was after Peavy or not. If one or more end up being useful in that trade, great. I highlly doubt Hendry made the trade in planning for a Peavy trade.

Kaplan changed his story in less then 5 hours. Unless he means the Cubs chances are 10 percent right now, and that could increase with a new owner, otherwise he totally flip flopped what he said earlier. I wonder if the Cubs have interest in Andy Pettitte. He's a guy I can see Hendry going after, and recall reading on a Cardinals board early in the offseason that Pettitte has met with the Cards and Cubs. It looks like he's not going back to the Yankees, and the Astros have no money. So maybe he will go to the Rangers, but he could decide to go to another contender in 09. Edited by cubsfan26
