Why? Johnson was really good last year and hasbeen over the last several years when he's been on the field

Hendry loves to overpay for mediocrity. Why not just let Pie and Fukudome fight it out for the CF job in ST? Hendry is going to end up paying Fukudome $12MM a year to be a bench player. Granted his numbers were not great last year, but he would be an acceptable CF if the Cubs sign Bradley.

I think he meant Randy rather than Reed.

I'm guessing stichface was talking about the news that the Cubs are targeting Randy Johnson, and not that they signed Reed Johnson. Also, Reed was good last year and would look good in a platoon with Fukudome. Don't see why his signing is a bad one.

It's called a platoon, and outfield depth. 3m for a guy who had hit 303/358/778 and 333/399/848 against LH is a good move. Bringing back Johnson was a no brainer, I'm shocked anybody is questioning this move.

You are probably right that he meant Randy. But I'm not a real fan of the Reed Johnson signing. Don't get me wrong, I think he is a decent enough player, but the Cubs are stacked with already signed CF options for next year. $3MM is a lot of money to pay a guy when you have two guys there already signed.

seriously, why do people think randy johnson is so terrible? he's old, a big health risk, and he's eventually going to start sucking, but he didn't last year. for some reason a lot of people think he sucked last year or something Edited by 17 Seconds

If you have an unlimited payroll it is a decent move. But then don't complain about not having enough payroll to make a trade for Peavy or needing to move players to sign Bradley. I would much rather have Peavy and/or Bradley than Reed Johnson.

I highly doubt that Johnson would stand in the way of a Peavy trade

I certainly don't think he's terrible. He was a little down on my list, but he isn't the worst thing that could happen. He likely gives you a good year next season and then becomes a FA again, so no longterm commitment is a positive that leaves options open in the future.

I'd definitely take him over Marquis by a considerable margin, and i'm not a Marquis hater.

I never complained about the Cubs not having enough money for Peavy. I just said the amount of talent to give up for Peavy(top prospect, team depth, and all our good trade pieces) with the combo of taking on his contract at 5y-85m was way too much. Fukudome/Pie are both LH hitters, and both are question marks offensivly. At least we know Reed Johnson will hit, especially against LH pitching.

Guys like Johnson are the type of players winning teams need to have. He can play all three outfield spots, pinch hit, pinch run and every play everyday for a few weeks and not kill you offensivly. Some don't realize how important having good depth is, over a 162 game season. Guys get banged up, or some guys have bad seasons. If you have someone to replace them on the roster already it helps alot. This was a major weakens Cubs teams had from 04-06, but it looks like Hendry has learned from his mistakes.

Johnson was good last year(better ERA+ then Zambrano, Lilly and Marquis), and I would be very happy if signed with the Cubs. I know he's not the pitcher he once was, but he's still good, and I think it would be kinda cool to see him pitch for the Cubs and get his 300th win.

These were a few interesting quotes I hadn't heard anywhere that at least leaves some possibility open:

Axelrod believes the talks are tabled and does not believe anything is over until the player is either signed or traded to another team

Kaplan asked again and Axelrod responded by telling him what Kevin Towers stated earlier in the day. "I don't know if I would call it dead. The talks hit snags."

Kaplan summed up the interview by saying, the talks for Peavy are tabled....not dead.

That's a real underrated site by the way. They always have nice summaries of any radio interviews or Levine reports, etc.

ok, I would rather have RJ on the mound - trouble is, he isn't likely to be there much. He did pitch a lot more last year than I had thought though.

I agree I been going to that site all offseason, and it gives me bunch of information. I love all the recaps of the radio interviews.

Has Peavy now become more agreeable to accepting a trade to the AL?

“He prefers the NL, definitely,” Axelrod said. “But you know, who knows where things will go from here?

“Jake has a strong preference to stay in the National League. If Jake's ever going to accept anything to the American League – and I don't want this to be taken wrong – I can safely say that it's going to be the Yankees or Red Sox or maybe the Angels. Those teams are going to be in contention and are going to spend money. If there were circumstances where he would be asked to go to the AL, kicking and screaming, those are the three places.”

Padres General Manager Kevin Towers said in November that he doubts Peavy would OK a trade to the Red Sox. After Cubs GM Jim Hendry told Towers on Thursday that trade talks on Peavy had collapsed, Towers was visited by Red Sox GM Theo Epstein. Towers said later his chat with Epstein was unrelated to Peavy.

Towers and the Cubs' Hendry did not rule out revisiting negotiations on Peavy.

Axelrod went to the winter meetings in Las Vegas for several reasons – including to be on hand if the Padres asked him to approve a trade to the Cubs. Peavy also was in Las Vegas until Tuesday night.

Axelrod met with Towers more than once during the meetings. The agent said he and Peavy were coming to the conclusion the Cubs and Padres would work out a deal.

Axelrod said Peavy was experiencing “lingering frustra tion” Friday.

“We all know that's part of a professional athlete's life,” he added.

I bet he ends up with the Angels

Randy Johnson and Carlos Zambrano were virtually identical last season, for what it's worth

RJ: 30 starts 184IP 173K's 3.91ERA 1.23WHIP 117ERA+

CZ: 30 starts 188IP 130K's 3.91ERA 1.29WHIP 114ERA+

Johnson was actually better than Z last year by a slim margin. If we can get Johnson on a reasonable one year deal, I'll take that in our rotation no problem

Wow, didn't even realize that.

except zambrano can hit and isnt 95

I never said I'd take Johnson over Zambrano, I was just pointing out to the people who are saying Johnson would be a horrible pickup that he performed slightly better than our ace did on the mound last year, and that if we did pick him up and he put up similar numbers as he did last year, he wouldn't be as bad of an acquisition as people are making him out to be.

Personally I'd rather have Lowe over Johnson, but I wouldn't be disappointed if we landed Johnson
