I could be wrong and I didn't follow it nearly as close as the Peavy talks, but last year when the Twins were working on trading Santana didn't they pull out, maybe a few times, and say they were just keeping him? Only to go on and trade him. I know that the situations are obviously a little different but I think something similar happened with Johan last year.

The biggest difference is that Peavy is signed long-term and is thus a burden for several years. Johan was gone after the season, anyway and at least garnered two picks if they lost him to FA. Pads are in a much worse leverage position with Peavy, IMO.

I agree 100%. Hendry did the right thing to tell Towers to kiss it.

I don't understand how you guys don't even care about this? You guys posted every second on here for like 5 straight days in anticipation of getting Peavy. And now that Hendry turns down this great deal for us, everyone is just like "oh well, lets go get Raul Ibanez." Are you kidding me?? Who would you rather have, Marquis and DeRosa or Peavy and Fontenot?? Thats the question Hendry should be asked. He better have something up his sleeve. He better trade Marquis in a separate deal to save a lot of money, then try and get back in this Peavy stuff.

I was pretty tepid on the deal all along, because I did, you know...actaul analysis.

I was being dead serious! I'm so mad right now. Who cares if we dont know ALL the details. We know that Soto, Lee, Aramis, Soriano, and Marmol or any of our other SPs weren't in the deal. If that is the case, then everyone else should be fair game! Hendry is just trying to gain leverage, but it will backfire and Peavy will stay put or go to ATL, ANA, or NYY. Hendry is a moron. DeRosa?? Peavy is only 3 more wins than Marquis??? According to what? That stupid system?? I say hes 10 more wins, easily. He could easily go 20-3 for us. Marquis is probably not even a .500 pitcher. I hate this. I thought this was a "done deal?" But oh wait..... the Twins want to give us Boof Bonsor for DeRosa!!! So lets back out of getting Peavy cuz we want Boof!!! Or something stupid along those lines!! I'm so mad right now!!!! Hendry, you could have had the greatest rotation of ALL TIME!! Instead you wanted to hold on to DeRosa!

HAHAHAH I LOVE THE ENDING

We could have had him for nothing!

Wrong.

All they wanted was Vitters and DeRosa!

Again, wrong.

Hendry screwed this up.

Most likely wrong.

Because everyone in the world knew how easy of a deal this would be for the Cubs, and it was a no brainer, that is why everyone said it was inevitable, because no team in their right mind would turn this deal down.... oh wait, the cubs did!

Considering the constantly changing media reports surrounding this and other trades, I have to wonder why you would put any faith in any report that said it was "inevitable."

I understand that not getting Peavy isn't the end of the world, but we had him! We could have had him for nothing! Opportunities like this do not come up very often. He wanted to come to CHI, Towers needed to trade him. All they wanted was Vitters and DeRosa! It was that easy. Hendry screwed this up. And all the little reports about it being inevitable just make it worse. Because everyone in the world knew how easy of a deal this would be for the Cubs, and it was a no brainer, that is why everyone said it was inevitable, because no team in their right mind would turn this deal down.... oh wait, the cubs did!

thank you for your insight. I'm glad we have an insider here to finally divulge the exact nature of the negotiations. you, my friend, have made it to big time. kudos!

I like how this means no trade will happen between now and ST. Towers wanted 6-7 players for Peavy, hell Santana brought in half of that. People are going to bitch about giving up too much, and the others are going to bitch about not getting him. Either way its funny to watch all the Fantasy GM's make there assumptions.

There was about 48 hours in this thread where everything reporting a done deal was praised as a good source and anything reporting problems was ripped as a stupid source. It was funny.

All they wanted was Vitters and Derosa. How is that wrong??? You calling Hart and Pie something?? How am I embarassing myself??? Cuz I'm the only one here pissed that we didn't get Jake Peavy?

With all of the names we were throwing around for Peavy, maybe Hendry ought to look elsewhere and get a pitcher and a RF. The first team that comes to mind is KC with DeJesus and Greinke, or SF with Winn and Cain/Sanchez. Personally, I would try to get McLouth from the Pirates with Hermida a close second. I realize that some of those players are "not available", but that was before we offered players like Vitters and Derosa. With discounted Marquis, Pie, Cedeno, Vitters, Hart, Wuertz, Atkins, and possibly DeRosa and/or Marshall available, I can't believe we can't remove the "not available" label on most of them.

This sucks, but I'm not surprised at all. Jim Hendry was in no postion to get desperate, and wasn't going to give into demands that put the Cubs in a bad postion. I don't think some realize that this probably cleans us out for anymore trades for the rest of the season. If we actually expect to add good players to the roster. Not to mention it would have probably destroyed our depth losing DeRosa and Marshall and not replacing them. Good bye Jake Peavy trade rumors.

And what did your "analysis" conclude for you?

He's worth about 3 more wins than Marquis for 2009, which could easily be made up by getting a real RFer via FA. So there's no need to commit long-term large money to a starting pitcher (rarely a good idea), let alone the prospects as well. And this is easily the best team in the division with only one of those upgrades, no need to do both.

THAT WE NEED OFFENSE

Didn't we have like the best offense in the NL last year, or at least close to the best? Who cares what we need. We need a RF and 1 more SP. I'd rather have Reed Johnson in RF and Peavy then Milton Bradley and Marquis.

It's all in how you ask the question would you rather have Peavy, limited flexibility to sign a LF, a giant question mark at second base, and deplete an already depleted farm system or Josh Vitters, Mark DeRosa, Sean Marshall, Felix Pie, and Milton Bradley with enough cash left over for some moves down the road.

That's idiotic

Why not just save ourselves some money and give Marshall the 5th starter spot, trade Marquis and get Bradley/Hermida and Furcal? Marshall will perform no worse than Randy Johnson would, our rotation is already a strength and there is no real need to spend big to upgrade it.

we need a more "balanced" offense...does that work better for you? or have you not watched the last 6 playoff games?

How am I a troll? I've been a member here for years. I used to go under DeuceBaseman but I got banned last year arquing with you idiots about how you guys thought Cedeno was better than Theriot and you guys thought Roberts wasnt worth Pie.

Pie does have value, whether you choose to believe it or not. The fact that you're speaking with absolute certainty over what the Padres were asking for is what's wrong. Media reports on the proposed package varied. You have no idea what the Padres were demanding here.

How am I embarassing myself??? Cuz I'm the only one here pissed that we didn't get Jake Peavy?

Because you're laying blame without all the facts.
