I'd say 50-50 on that. I only know one Sd guy these days. He doesn't seem nearly as optimistic as the Cubs do.

Mike just texted me to say "leaning toward yes."

The GM's and staff all leave at different times, depending on how quickly they wrap up talks.

Last year Gillick left at 9am local time, but Beane was there until 9 pm.

I asked who Mike was and he told me that he couldn't share his last name/position with the Cubs with me.

Any guesses?

As for the e-mail, it might make sense that the Cubs would be more optimstic. It sounds like the Padres are asking for more in return for taking on Marquis and that the Cubs are balking. Maybe the Padres guy doesn't think the Cubs will cave, while the guy on the Cubs side says "leaning toward yes", meaning theymight be willing to give in. Maybe I'm reaching... who knows.

So when he said Mike texted me and said leaning towards yes, that means he thinks a deal will get done?

I really hope Churchill is right! If Mike is the special assistant to Hendry, which makes sense, then he should have inside information. And if he says "leaning towards yes" then a deal has to get done. Meaning that there is a deal in place and we just have to decide if it's good enough, and if we're leaning toward yes, then it can't be that big of a hold up that would cost us Jake Freakin Peavy!!!

LAS VEGAS — One day after voicing his most optimistic report to date about trading Jake Peavy to the Cubs, Padres General Manager Kevin Towers said he should know Thursday whether the much-discussed terms are finally set.

The Cubs were to reply to Towers Wednesday night and again Thursday, when the winter meetings will end.

Towers said his talks with Cubs GM Jim Hendry Wednesday were the lengthiest of a process that began several weeks ago.

“They know our position,” Towers said. “It's kind of in their hands.”

The consensus among several clubs not involved in the trade is that the Padres, who are exploring new ownership and slashing their payroll, need to move Peavy's $63 million contract this offseason.

Padres CEO Sandy Alderson has said that the trade must make “baseball sense.”

If this is true and we also trust Churchil (and I do) then this is all fitting together... the "leaning towards yes" makes perfect sense in this context, and would also explain why the Cubs could be more optimistic than the Pads.

If it indeed is in the Cubs' hands, and they're leaning towards yes, why would the Padres be so pessimistic?

I hope this is true, I guess we will find out tomorrow.

By the way, this was posted on another forum

Jessie Rogers reported all day on the score saying that this deal was pretty much falling apart all day. He even broke in one time on murphs show and on Bores and Berstine and said that it does not look like Peavy deal will get done at all let alone at the meetings. Murph went as far to say after Jessie went off the air with him that he thinks it is less then 50 50 that it gets done. Jessie even had lunch with Piniella and he sounded really confident in what he was saying.

All the media had lunch with the GMs...he wasnt special

Maybe because the Cubs haven't given into their demands so far, so they might think what will change tomorrow?

It sounds like I can go to sleep and check back after the Rule V draft. I hope I log on tomorrow afternoon and comment on page 150.

Because they might not feel like Hendry is going to agree with what they want.

By the way, I ran my theory by Churchill in a relatively long e-mail and finished it by asking if it was possible (my theory). He simply responded "Yes."

Don't read too much into that.

"There are some guys we're interested in taking, but a lot depends on our roster situation ... everything is tied to this [Peavy deal]," Towers said.

Wouldn't that imply that he'd have to know if we say "yes" before the 1030 draft?
