C.C. Sabathia Rumors: Monday

By Tim Dierkes [October 27 at 8:22am CST]

David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution has a C.C. Sabathia rumor:

The figure I’m hearing that Milwaukee might offer C.C. $100 million for four years. They’re hoping that by going with fewer years and more per year, they can keep him. He’s indicated to friends a serious interest in staying there, he liked it so much. The Brewers might help their chances of signing him if they pick up the option on Mike Cameron, who’s a good friend of CC’s.

With Cameron, the Brewers figure to have over $70MM committed (not including Chris Capuano). It's hard to see the Brewers backloading an already huge $25MM salary to Sabathia, so they'd probably have to take payroll to the mid $90MM range to fit him in. Keeping Cameron and Sabathia would seem to limit roster construction - it could necessitate a Prince Fielder or J.J. Hardy trade, or leave little money for third base or the bullpen.

This really doesnt sound realistic. Theyd essentially never be able to afford another free agent.

Are they deep enough at 1B to afford losing Fielder at the moment? I knew LaPorta was the heir apparent at 1B as talk was they were going to trade Prince in his contract year.

How close is Gamel? I'm assuming he's just not going to be able to stick anywhere but 1st. If he's a realistic possibility for this year I could see them doing it. Go with a mix of guys until you call him up to delay arby a year and then you stick him in there.

Brad Nelson, from Algona Iowa by the way, played first base all through his career in the minors, then being blocked by Prince at first, moved to the outfield. He made their playoff roster and has always swung a good bat. He might have a shot at first should they trade the big guy.

They couldn't be worse defensively at first if they chose to say move Braun from LF to 1B, and then sign an OFer like Milton Bradley to play LF, if they have the money after CC.

All of this seems to unnecessary, but it makes sense at the end - so stay with me.

Fielder traded. Move Braun to 1B, move Hall to LF, Move Hardy to 3B, put Escobar at SS.

I realized how ridiculous this is while I was typing it, but whatever. :-))

Bill Hall's bat wasn't good enough at 3B, it'd be a nightmare in LF.

I'm all for the Brewers dropping 25M a year on CC. It would cripple their ability to make any other moves, and I would enjoy watching the Brewer fans when he breaks down after the abuse they loaded on him this year.

Gamel had a handful of AAA at-bats last year before getting called up in September, but I'd think the Brewers would like to get him a full season at AAA before bringing him up. At the very least, I'd expect them to treat him the same way they treated Ryan Braun -- Braun had a monster spring in his rookie year, but was sent down until they were reasonably sure they could avoid him being named a Super Two (it's moot now, since Braun has that long-term deal, but I believe it worked...I could be wrong, though).

If Fielder were traded, I imagine the Brewers would try to get a short-term replacement in the trade, or at least somebody to platoon with Joe Nelson. Nelson's not really much of a prospect...he's on the older side and just seems to hit AAA pitching well. I'd probably compare him to Micah Hoffpauir...a nice bat, but not someone you'd like to see starting every day if you're planning on contending for the playoffs.

Of course, there's always Russell Branyan... :D)

I can follow the logic well enough, but you have to ask yourself if the best solution for an already defensively-challenged club is to have three guys playing out of position on an everyday basis.
