Hence the Mike Jacobs "TYPE" player. In other words a younger, left handed 1B bat that might not have the level of production Lee had a couple of years ago but a solid .280/.350/.450 line. That player is out there and can be had if Lee is dealt. There are plenty of that player. Andy LaRoche, Billy Butler et. all

I don't know about plenty. Butler is probably not available. Laroche is nowhere near a lock to OBP .350, let alone a decent bet. And of course we already talked about Jacobs.

Even if you say it like "Jacobs type" player you are still talking about a crappy player. Besides the Cubs already have a similar player in the org by the name of Micah Hoffpauir. Now there are two players I wouldn't mind going after: Conor Jackson. and Chad Tracy. I know Tracy is like 2 yrs removed from his last good offensive yr, but I think either he or Jackson getting out of Arizona and back into a regular 500 atbats regular PT I think both players can be productive. I would to take a shot at either Jackson or Tracy if they could be had.

How about dump Lee's contract and use the money to put Dunn at first? Slide DeRosa to RF full time, give Fontenot a full time shot, then have Fukudome and Pie battle it out for the second half of the CF platoon with Reed Johnson.

Soriano- R

Fontenot- L

Ramirez- R

Dunn- L

Soto- R

DeRosa- R

Theriot-R

Pie/Fuku/Johnson- R/L

Actually that doesn't really look so good.

All right, I'm in a betting mood. I've already got a bet with RedFlash that Jose Tabata doesn't turn out to be anything special. Now let's go for Derrek Lee. I bet he doesn't post anything better than an .805 OPS in 2009. And while people say "there are worse things" look at the money he's making, you could probably get a .780 OPS out of a year of Sean Casey making nothing. I see more talent in Dan Johnson than his career .763 OPS indicated, he actually makes better contact than I thought he did.

Heck, think about this. You know who's the Rich Harden for 1st basemen? Nick Johnson. Replace Derrek Lee with Nick Johnson, when Nick Johnson is healthy he's a badass. He's not healthy that often. Nick Johnson is the kind of lefty that would help this lineup.

I still maintain Tabata will become a very useful player in the majors. And while you MAY NOT like him, I do. And when he becomes a solid player, you can get order yourself a steaming plate of crow to eat.

As for a bet, no thank you. And if I was a betting man, I would take you up on that bet. Even on a down yr for Lee, he still put up a .823 OPS this yr, and I doubt he would be that bad that quickly.

As for Nick Johnson, I actually agree with you. I've always loved his ability to play, like Carlos Pena, but like you said, he is always injury which means you would have to handle Johnson with kid gloves.

You're kind of backsliding now, you said he'd be more than just a useful player in the majors.

Derrek Lee only posted a .760 OPS after May 1st. I think that shows where he's heading.

Nick Johnson could be had, I imagine, my impression is after he got nothing for Dmitri Young and Cordero blew out his arm, he started to realize this whole "try and make every trade the Scott Kazmir trade" angle was not working.

Either a useful player or a really good player, doesn't matter he will be a player that teams will make a play for. He won't be a Top 25 player, but he will definately be a player that will be productive for a long time.

I know the stats about Lee, and something tells me Lee was injured without letting anybody know about it or he was distracted for some reason. I think he will have a solid rebound yr in 2009, regardless if it's with the Cubs, or not. But your bet that Lee wouldn't reach .805 OPS would be an easy win for those who believe he will.

In today's Tribune, Paul Sullivan stated that Lee can be traded if he waives his NTC because the Cubs have Micah Hoffpauir to replace him. What an idiot. #-o

Yeah I read that and the first thought I had was, "Yes, Phil the Cubs would trade Derrek Lee just to get Micah Hoffpauir into the lineup. NM Tex is available, no, no, Micah would be the 1st baseman if the Cubs dealt Lee."

Rogers is a tool, and I get dumber reading his articles.

Ok, I misread who wrote the damn article. I read the article, but did not read who wrote the column. Are you happy now?

Now "The Idiot" (aka Phil Rogers) is suggesting that Lee might go to San Diego in a package for Peavy plus Adrian Gonzalez. I'm sure San Diego's rebuilding plans included sending their 26-year-old 1B making $875,000 who had a line of .279, 36 HRs, 119 RBI, .361, .510 for a 33-year-old 1B making $13,000,000 who had a line of .291, 20 HRs, 90 RBI, .361, .462. I would love to see the rest of the package the Cubs would have to include to make that deal. Rogers must have been drunk when he wrote this piece.

Lee for Peavy and Gonzalez? That sounds fine to me ;)

Yeah, I don't understand why the Padres would want Lee (not that I wouldn't mind it) in a deal for Peavy and Gonzalez. But if the Padres would take (and I assume) Lee/Marshall/Pie/Vitters/Ceda and a A ball prospect for Peavy and Gonzalez then where do I sign? Now this is a pipedream I know, but you know Hendry, he works best when people don't give him a chance. Hendry is the master of making the unexpected move. (the Choi for Lee trade shocked me, Soriano signing, DeRosa signing).
