i guess penn state's schedule has been soft, but this is a really impressive performance. there are a couple of potential slip-ups (vs michigan, who we never beat, @iowa, home vs michigan st), but really the game against ohio st is the only very large hurdle to clear for an undefeated season.

Remember when Wash State was good? It was that long ago. Vincent Young played them when they were good.

They were OU's opponent in the Rose Bowl in 2002.

This is been impressive tonight by Penn State. I think they showed they have played the weakest schedule of all the Top 10 teams so far, but tonights win and begun to convince me otherwise. I thought Wisconsin was going to put up a real good fight tonight.

Wisconsin isn't very good though. I'm not saying Penn State isn't good or anything, I'm just saying Wisconsin isn't and PSU hasn't played anyone really.

well you can compare what penn state did against the teams they've played versus what other teams did. they blew out oregon state, who beat usc. they're slaughtering wisconsin at camp randall, and wisconsin gave ohio state all they can handle last week. you can say wisconsin isn't very good, but a team that goes to wisconsin and blows their doors off probably is very good.

plus, you have to hold other teams to the same standard. lsu has played nobody before tonight - auburn might have been a top 10 team at the time, but they've been exposed as a fraud - and now lsu is getting thumped. mizzou hasn't played anybody before tonight, and they're struggling with oklahoma st. texas beat ou today and deserves to be #1, but they hadn't played anybody either. texas tech is texas tech, so obviously they haven't played anyone. alabama has one very good win and hasn't played anybody aside from that.

point is, the other highly-ranked teams have played at most one very good team.

Penn State has played the games on their schedule and more or less blown the doors off of every single team they've played. Some of their players would be in more of the award picture if they weren't pulled in the 3rd quarter of almost every game

guys ive been saying PSU is good for weeks now. im just saying no one else in the big ten is any good. its like USC in the pac ten. if PSU slips up one week theyre completely out of it. a team with equal losses from the SEC or Big XII will pass PSU (or USC). And for the most part the SEC and Big XII teams losses are to top ten teams (UGA to Bama), (OU to UT), (Mizzou or UT to the other), (LSU to UF?) and so on. The problem is Penn State won't play any one in that class. Im not going to move a team with one loss below them just because PSU has no losses (i am talking about OU, not LSU or UF at this time).

I really don't think PSU has enough athleticism to hang with the cream of the Big XII or SEC. They do have some players that matchup, but nowhere near the depth. Really, the NC should be the Big XII champion versus the SEC unless someone else goes undefeated.

If PSU loses to Ohio State, you can make a legitimate case that a two loss SEC or Big XII team would deserve to get in the NC Over them. That's the problem with playing in a weak conference. You have to win out.

I won't argue that they have to win out. Absolutely true based on the conference.

I'll argue that they don't have depth. Their backup offensive skill players could all be starters. Their defense is also very disciplined. Hopefully they'll have a chance to match up with one of the big boys from the Big XII or SEC in January.

So who is now leading the Heisman race? Even though Bradford lost he had a hell of a game, McCoy's numbers were not as impressive however watching how he carried the team to victory was very impressive if not more impressive. Daniel's isn't having a great game and on the verge of losing. Of course players outside of the Big XII deserve consideration too.

Colt McCoy's gotta be there. Bradford really didn't do anything to lower him.

im not talking about depth. im talking about speed around the field depth.

the speed in the SEC is always a step above everyone else. I don't know what they eat down south but every team in the confederacy flies all over the field. But Penn State has done well against the SEC in bowl games, so speed isn't always enough

I think someone has to jump Bama to #1. I don't like the idea of an idle team moving to #1 just because everyone around them lost.

Bama should be #1.

yeah but this year penn state tries to play that brand of football. in years past, not so much.

offensively, sure. Defensively, they're still about a strong front 7. The difference is that they have Maybin at DE who can fly. Who knows if their DB's can keep up with elite WR's (and we won't know, since there aren't any elite WR's in the Big 10 outside of Benn)

as long as you're okay with Texas jumping them if/when they beat Mizzou/Okie St. the next two weeks
