If we win today, that puts Houston 10.5 back and sets the magic number at 6, right?

So, after that, am I correct in thinking that a sweep of the Brewers (not assuming anything, just thinking aloud... we could easily lose in that series) would clinch it on Thursday if the Astros lose at least a game in that time period?

The sweep would eliminate the Brewers, but wouldn't necessarily eliminate the Astros until they lose another game, I think...

Assuming the Cubs win today, that would set the magic numbers at:

Cubs

Mil 6

Hou 4

If:

Cubs Sweep, Hou Sweep:

Cubs

Hou 1

Mil X

Cubs Sweep, Hou loses at least one game:

Cubs

Hou E

Mil E

Cubs win 2 of 3, Hou Sweeps:

Cubs

Hou 2

Mil 2

Cubs win 2 of 3, Hou wins 2 of 3:

Cubs

Mil 2

Hou 1

Cubs win 2 of 3, Hou wins 1 of 3:

Cubs

Mil 2

Hou E

Cubs win 1 of 3, Hou Sweeps:

Cubs

Mil 4

Hou 3

Cubs win 1 of 3, Hou 2 of 3:

Cubs

Mil 4

Hou 2

Cubs win 1 of 3, Hou 1 of 3:

Cubs

Mil 4

Hou 1

Cubs win 1 of 3, Hou swept:

Cubs

Mil 4

Hou E

If the Cubs get swept, Houston can not get eliminated.

So basically, Cubs need to win today, sweep the Brewers, and have Houston lose 1 game to clinch on Thursday.

The Cards magic number is 3, so they can be elimated as soon as tomorrow.

Thought so. Cool, thanks!

At the very least, the chances of clinching on this homestand seem pretty good. I've been hoping all season that that would be the case and those damn games in Shea would be meaningless.

Haven't had much time to read up on it, but am I correct in thinking that the Cubs cannot clinch with a win on Friday (though possibly later that night?) I'm really busy at work and will likely need to ditch my ticket for Friday's game.

If the Cubs win the next 4 games, and the Astros don't lose, I think they would clinch with a win Friday...

Ok, here's what we need to have happen for the games after Thursday to have absolutely no meaning at all (aka, clinch a postseason birth, division, AND HFA) - Mets could tie if finished 10-0, but Cubs would have finish 0-10;

- Cubs sweep Brewers [postseason clinched]

- Fish beat Astros just once in the 3-game series in FLA [division clinched]

- (pretty much impossible, but hey...) Washington sweeps Mets in a 4-gamer in DC [HFA effectively clinched]

So.. since a Nats sweep (or even 3 Nats wins) of the Mets is pretty much out of the question, let's hope they take 2 and that will leave the HFA magic number at 3 [if Cubs sweep MIL].

Well, here we go. I set it up when I started the thread but the homestand starts tomorrow and there is no reason why we shouldn't clinch this homestand. I really hope we do it at home. And not only because I'll be there to see it.

okay, it's mostly that.

Depends mostly on the next 3 games. Win 2, and clinching at home becomes very likely. Win 1, and clinching at home becomes very unlikely.

I'll be at Saturday and Sunday's games. Needless to say, I'll be very unhappy if it ends up happening right before or right after that.

I want them to clinch when they win, not when someone else wins, and I want it to be a game i am watching (as if I miss watching games)

I'll be at tomorrow's game. Coming into the season, I knew it would have been a longshot for the Cubs to clinch in this game (They would have needed a 12-game lead in the division), but I figured it'd at least still be a meaningful game.

I also have tickets for Saturday. Yay for ticket drafts where most of the other guys are interested in Sox/Cubs tickets or summer tickets. :)
