How the hell do they always do this? This is the 4th time in the last 5 seasons that they've risen from the ashes and made a furious late season run. It's probably too late this season, but still. They are amazing. Edited by 17 Seconds

Yeah, the Cards announcers said 3 out of the last 4 seasons, but I took issue with that. We all know the finish to the 2004 season. 2005, coming back from a 15-30 start to finish with 89 wins and a World Series appearance. 2006, nearly catching the Cards before their playoff run. Nothing last year, but they are back at it this year. Unreal.

I want to root for the Stros to take it, but that's kinda hard when they're facing us this weekend.

Maybe the Phils can sweep the Brewers, and we can sweep the Astros (after they win tomorrow, of course)...that would be an absolute best case scenario.

Dont be so sure its to late. If they sweep us this weekend, which isnt impossible, and the Phillies sweep or take 3/4 from the Brewers, which again, isnt impossible, they can get back in that race real quick, especially the wild card.

had to be that randy wolf acquisition.

I think they're like 8-1 in games started by him or something like that. I haven't even bothered to check his numbers but I'm guessing it's just because he gets a lot of run support (and he got to dominate the Cubs)

either one is possible considering the recent trends of the Brewers and Cubs

Does the guy in the back of your sig pic have a shirt that says "porn" on it?

I know this is gonna sound strong-willed, but I seriously doubt the Astros will sweep the Cubs, especially if those games are pushed back.

wait are these posts seriously referring to the astros having a legitimate chance at winning the division. please say no so that my brain does not explode.

I don't think anyone is really saying that. But they have made it mildly interesting in the WC race. If you consider 6.2% interesting. I was responding to the fact that they really have put together some unbelievable late runs runs in 4 of the last 5 years.

absolutely. the LLF and AF posts seem to be suggesting that the astros winning the division is plausible, though.

The more and more I think about it the more and more I'd love to see the Astros win the Wild Card. It would knock out the Brewers and still allow us to face LA/ARI in the first round. Edited by 17 Seconds

I'm guessing you mean Astros

And I agree...

And it's gonna be LA

The Astros have a really, really easy schedule the rest of the season. They could legitimately come close to winning out after/before/whenever the Cub's series.

they have a 1 in 1000 chance at winning the division. they'd need an utter collapse by both the cubs and brewers to win the division, which is made even more unlikely by the fact that the cubs and brewers play each other 6 times. even if the brewers win all 6 games - which would be the best-case scenario as far as getting the astros closer to the division lead - they're not making up any ground at all on the brewers. so even if we assume the astros go 6-0 during that span, you'd have these standings (yes i know i'm playing the schedule out of order):

MIL 89-64 --

CHC 88-64 0.5

HOU 86-67 3.0

so they're down 3 games with 9 games left to play, and they have to pass two teams to pass in those 9 games. so they'd have to sweep the cubs. they'd pretty much have to go something like 16-1 or 15-2 the rest of the way, sweeping the cubs, having the brewers sweep the cubs in 6 games, and then the brewers crap the bed in their other games. this scenario is, needless to say, pretty damn unlikely, hence the 1 in 1000 chance.

that also ignores the fact that in baseball, or almost any sport for that matter, you can't look at 17 games and say it's plausible that they'll just about win out. if that were the case then the cubs and brewers would never have lost those games to the nationals and reds. but even if the astros are on fire and the pirates are headed down the toilet, the pirates are still more likely to win one game than they are to get swept.

Something tells me the Cubs are going to take 2 from the Astros, all but eliminating them from the division title.

Oh, I wasn't saying that they have any shot at the division. But the wildcard they could possibly do, and by "come close to winning out" I meant something like 10-2 or 9-3, not including the series with the Cubs.
