Nothing like equaling the win total of the previous year's team in August, especially when the previous team made the playoffs.

Wow, that's amazing to think about.

Horrible, horrible, horrible managing by Lou in the bottom of the 8th.

DeRo is hot, but I wouldn't have minded having him bunt if basically anyone but Cedeno was up next...and then not PHing Blanco with Soto?

Come on, Lou.

There's no way of knowing if Lou called it or if DeRo did it on his own. Len seemed to indicate that DeRo was doing it on his own...

Fine, but Lou needs to react accordingly. Soto should have been hitting for Cedeno or Blanco.

I love that they won and everything luckily ended up falling into place, but this is 2 games in a row they've won in spite of REALLY stupid late inning decisions by Lou.

Then who plays SS in the 9th?

Dave Kaplan is such a moron.

He just said that Volquez should be rookie of the year. I don't even need to explain why that's stupid.

The other day, on the pre-game, his producer told him to admit he was wrong about how he thought all offseason that the Cubs needed to make the move for Roberts. His response was that Roberts had just doubled down the line (or some crap like that) and that why wouldn't you want that guy on your team. When the producer responded by mentioning DeRosa's success and the fact that we saved a bunch of trade chips that we went on to use for Rich Harden, Kaplan's arrogant response was, "Oh yea, I'm sure Matt Murton would've kept the Rich Harden trade from happening." When the producer mentioned Gallagher (who would've been the key cog in either trade), Kaplan ignored the point.

From Roto.This is nuts

Marmol has allowed just two hits in 16 1/3 innings during August. The league is hitting an absurd .127 off him overall, and the three strikouts today gave him 100 in 74 2/3 innings this season.

I can't remember if Fontenot was used already. If he had, Soto can only PH for Blanco. If not, put Fontenot or DeRo at SS. Yeah, dicey, but it's ideally after the Cubs hae driven in an insurance run or more and have at least a 2-run lead for the 9th.

Best reliever in baseball, bar none.

Damn I hate the Brewers!

We'd have a 10.5 game lead in the East right now and in the West, we'd be up by 16!! games.

Basically, (if in East) we'd be able to play 12-15 the rest of the way, and the Mets would have to go 24-4 to win the East. In the West, we could go 12-15, and still win the West by a game [& that is taking into account that ARI finished 29-0!].

What if the Brewers have been pushing us to greater heights though? They've been there the whole year. We've had to play our best baseball to stay head. I don't think a little positive pressure from the Crew has necessarily been a bad thing.

Don't take me wrong, it will be proud to crow we won the toughest division in the NL on our way to NL HFA, but man would September be so much more relaxing if we were in one of the other 2 divisions.

Yay Cub pitching: The Phillies were held without an extra base hit in a game for the first time since June 18.

So, just got back from the game. Funny thing happened...

The guy behind us the entire game is being the epitome of why cubs fans get bad reps. He keeps talking, very stupidly mind you, about his girlfriend, McCain's running mate, etc. Nothing about baseball at all. No real knowledge of anything, all superficial.

Then, when Marmol comes in, he goes "Man, I wish we didn't bring him in. He's just not reliable."

It's at this point when I can't hold my tongue. I turn around and go "You do realize he has a .40 era since the all-star break and has only given up 4 hits in 19 innings." And he makes some comment like oh, i'm sorry, I didn't realize you were a mathamatician, blah blah blah. To which I respond "No, I'm not a mathematician. I'm an actual fan. It's guys like you the give Cubs fans a bad name."

He then called me the "Pete Sampras of assholes."

All I had to say was: I don't have his chest hair.

Anyways, good win. Two thumbs up for the bullpen.

Pete Sampras of assholes? What does that even mean?

I don't know? I thought the reference was about 10 years too late as well. I mean, if he said the Roger Federer of Assholes, I woulda known what he meant.

Entirely besides the fact that he tried to reference tennis during a baseball game. I mean, Babe Ruth of Assholes woulda been nice.
