Guzman threw fastballs exclusively in the first inning.

Leadoff batter in the second grounds out 1-3.

Flyout to RF.

Strikeout swinging on a "dandy of a breaking ball"

Jason Dubois hit a HR in the first, Micah Hoffpauir just hit one out into some swimming pool...I'm assuming the ballpark in Metairie has an Arizona-style pool in their ballpark.

Gooz's third:

Leadoff BB.

Foul bunt strikeout.

4-6-3 double play.

3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K, 4 GO-2 FO, 34 pitches (20 strikes).

Gooz was only scheduled to go 3 innings. Doubt they'll push a 4th inning on Angel despite the low pitch count since his next appearance is slated to be from Iowa's pen.

Didn't see your question, though. It wasn't some sot of ninja edit.

Smith looked prety good. Nice off speed stuff. Blew away Johnston and Rosa as well. I think he is done. 5 ip, 5h, 2r, 2bb, 3k...and he picked Lara off 1st (not that hard to do). Not the best lefty I have seen this year, but looked good for a MWL debut. the only mistake he made was hit 450 feet by Ridling.

Texas 1st rounder Justin Smoak (11th overall, South Carolina) makes his pro debut against us tomorrow night after signing late Friday.

Does anyone know anything about the radar gun at New Orleans? Gooz was consistently 88-92 mph on their radar, which seems odd when he was consistently 94-97 the last few times out with Daytona and Tennessee. I'm guess it's a slow gun, especially considering he gave up 1 hit (a single) and got 3 strikeouts.

I like.

I'd like to see the success rate of amateur pitchers with first round talent who fell in the draft because of injury concerns. Hendry seemed to target a number of those kinds of guys in this year's draft (Carpenter, Shafer, and Wilson most notably) and I have to wonder how often those guys overcome their injury problems and make it to the majors with some success. I remember reading somewhere that those kinds of pitchers have been getting snapped up by budget-conscious teams with more frequency as of late, so perhaps there is something to targeting those kinds of players.

Jeremy Papelbon threw 6 shutout innings today, he's now up to 35.1 scoreless innings.

Marcus Hatley struggled a bit but according to the Boise announcer, he was consistently 94-96 mph. Didn't know he threw that hard.

I wouldn't put a velocity decrease out of the question. He's missed a lot of time. All the work rehabbing can take away arm strength at times. The key will be how hard he is throwing out of the pen. If he's not around that 94-97 in relief, then he may have to be rested again.

I didn't realize he was as old as he is. And also, its weird having reached the point where I consider a prospect old if I'm younger than him.

Wait until you turn 40 and they talk about guys your age as though they were father time.
