The Boston Globe reports that the Red Sox have acquired Paul Byrd from the Indians for a player to be named later.

With Tim Wakefield hurting and Clay Buchholz struggling, the Red Sox went out and got a veteran starter for the stretch run. Byrd is 7-10 with a 4.53 ERA and will be a free agent after the season. With Charlie Zink scheduled to start in Wakefield's place Wednesday, the Red Sox could either bump him from the rotation after one outing or replace Buchholz, who's scheduled to pitch next Friday. For the Indians, Aaron Laffey is the obvious choice to replace Byrd in the rotation.

Would he really be an improvement over Buchholz? and secondly are they already giving up on Buchholz? isn't the guy like 23?

The way Buchholz has been pitching, Byrd would probably be an improvement for the remainder of the season. The Red Sox aren't giving up on Buchholz, but he's clearly not getting it done this year. He hasn't had even a quality start in his last eight starts (0-6, 8.61 ERA over that span). They can send him down for the remainder of the minor league season, bring him back up when rosters expand, and use him out of the 'pen.

How did the Indians go from the 2007 team that almsot made the WS to the disasterous 2008 team? At least we had 2004 as some what of a transition year before the bottom dropped out in '05 and '06.

everyone worth a crap got injured. They are rolling out an outfield of Francisco, Sizemore and Gutierrez these days and Andy Marte is hitting about .150

The Cubs were one win better in 2004 than in 2003. The rest of the division just got better.

CBS sportsline's headline says:

Indians flip Byrd to Boston.

That's why sportswriters get the big bucks, folks!

HAHAHA

Anyway, this isn't a bad trade for Boston. Gives the rotation some depth and they can let him walk at the end of the year if they don't want him back.

for what it's worth, Sizemore is pretty decent

i wasn't trying to bunch him in with the other two talent-wise, but that outfield is a little like Sosa/Bullet/Timmons right now. Plus they've had very little out of Hafner or Martinez

I can't understand why the Yankees didn't blobk this trade. Beyond mere spite- which is usually good enough with those 2 teams- the Yankees could use another SP.

Good move for the Red Sox. Watching Buchholz pitch is painful. Plus every year it seems like they need about 9 starting pitchers to get through the year, this should help.

I didn't agree with what they did with Masterson though.

2 WS in last, what, 4 years? I will take 9 SP's if it means just 1 WS
