Agreed. Shootout are stupid. That's like determining a baseball game by homerun derby. Buttman needs to get rid of shootouts.

Nobody is arguing about blaming the loss of the game to the NHL because of the shootout, what people are saying there shouldn't be a shootout period. There should OT until the game is decided. I wouldn't be opposed to say;

1OT: 5 on 5.

2OT: 4 on 4.

3OT: 3 on 3

(or people prefer, play the 4 on 4 from the start of the first OT to the end of the game)

 

And you play the 3 on 3 till the game is decided. A gimmick should never determine the outcome of the game. (and yes they should also goes toward futbol) Football games are not decided by a field goal kciking contest. Basketball games are not decided by 3 point shooting contest, or dunking contest. Baseball games are not decided by homerun. Hockey should not be decided by a shootout. It's stupid, and I am pretty sure if the NHL survey the players about how should the game be decided, I am confident that the majority of players in the NHL would say OT till the game is decided.

Well Cynosure is counting every single shootout loss as a Hawk win somehow, so that's why I said that.

 

For what it's worth, I don't really mind the shootout. Your idea doesn't sound bad either, but the shootout caters to the casual fan which is what the NHL tried to do after the lockout.

i would guarantee that the players would not vote for OT until the game is decided in the regular season (unless it was presented as the only alternative to shootouts, which is dumb).

they will never play OT hockey until there is a winner during the regular season. 1 quadruple ot could ruin a teams season. I am not a big fan of the shootout and would just as well have a tie. Truth is there is not any easy solutions.

 

It was a great game last night...to bad either team would have had to lose in such a manner. That game would have been worth watching until someone won on a legitimate goal. Sadly, the NHL is littered with some low quality games that would be painful to watch if it had to go past a 5 min ot and a shootout.

And no I know I won't "get over it" because it's stupid. Might as well say...hey baseball, when the 9th inning is over, were going to have homerun derby. If hockey wants to increasing scoring, how about making the rinks international size, which is bigger then the NHL size, or instead of it being 5 on 5, make it 4 on 4 on NHL size ice. No need for shootout, period. I won't get over it, until it's gone. I rather see a tie then some carnival parade that is the shootout.

it's kind of stupid to use baseball as an example since it's a series of 1v1 events. complaining about the shootout is dumb, it's not going anywhere. it's not bad for the game at all. i don't know if it's good or not, but it's definitely not bad (and pissing off purists is not a bad thing since they aren't going to go anywhere because a handful of games are decided in a way that they don't like).

 

the point system is the problem in the NHL, not shootouts. either go to a 3 point system (3 for regulation win, 2 for OT/SO win w/ 1 for a OT/SO loss) or go by W/L record and stop recording OT/SO losses.

Little national TV action for the Hawks tonight. These conference games are critical, and these type of road wins are necessary for a team that expects to make the playoffs.
