Peoria Journal-Star[/url]"]While Josh Vitters has been impressive in Boise, the Cubs have been in no hurry to move him back to Peoria, where he was for four games before getting hurt in April.

“Our job is not to rush them through,” Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said on Thursday before the Chiefs got no-hit by Burlington. “If they are capable of skipping a level down the road, then they will.”

Seeing Vitters again in a Chiefs uniform — which fans never really did since all four games he played were on the road — may not sound like good news for 2009. But Vitters won’t turn 19 until later this month, so there still is no real hurry, especially with a plethora of third baseman ahead of him in the system.

“When you have a guy like Vitters, there’s nothing wrong with leaving him and letting him have some success and have a good year,” Hendry said. “Maybe next year he plays half at one level and half at the next. He’s 19 years old so there is time to get him up the ladder.”

Where Samson ends up after this season and beyond is unknown — which is a term that can’t be used anymore about the Cubs’ 34th-round draft pick in 2006.

“He’s starting to turn some heads,” Cubs scouting director Tim Wilken said while visiting O’Brien Field in June. “We felt that a couple of years ago, when we signed him. You just knew it was going to be a longer haul.”

That was largely because Samson was taken right out of high school and still is maturing.

“He’s a slender guy and still filling out,” Wilken said. “His shoulders are pretty broad so when he’s 23, 24 years old he might be 185, 190 pounds. You’ll have to remember him when he was 160, 165.”

Not so far. Where did Robert's control go?

(He's walked in three runs so far.)

no idea but he sure has been awful the last 3 outings. 9.1ip, 12 hits, 12 runs, 10 earned (and the 2 that werent were because he made errors on back to back plays), 6 walks and only 7 K. I wonder if a switch to the pen is in store for him.

Jonathan Wyatt (solo) and Brandon Guyer (2-run) have hit home runs in the top of the 3rd.

ETA: Per Nathan, sounds like Dylan Johnston will come off Peoria's DL this week.

Nate, if you get a chance to read this and respond, any thoughts on Samson's defense? I know he's made a ton of errors. Is he really that bad? Does he look professional, and does he have quickness/range, or a good arm?

Just curious whether he has any chance to be a good shortstop at a higher level, or will need to switch to 2B soon enough. What do you think?

Colvin now 3 for 5 with a second double to go along with a grand slam HR.

Think we'll be seeing him get a shot in AAA before the end of the year, Raisin?

Colvin won't be going to Iowa this year. He's been bad all year long(this month so far is the only one with an OPS above .700), there's only a couple weeks left in the minor league season, there's no need for OFs at Iowa, and if they did, Fuld would probably be the AA guy to get that call.

Ahh didn't realize the season was almost over... still learning our minor league system and how everything works, thanks for clarifying.

Nice to see Colvin and Pie salvaging their seasons. colvin has finally shot past that .243 line, and has pushed past the .700-OPS line, presumably for good. If he can stay hot for the stretch, he could perhaps push .260, and push towards 15 HR. For a 22-year-old in a tough pitchers league, that could end up being a disappointing but not a write-him-off season.

Nice to see Rosa, who's got the tons of doubles and a solid average, starting to turn some into HR's. At age 20, maybe he will turn into a decent HR hitter down the road.

Guyer's numbers are also working out pretty good. Entering today, he was hitting .300 and OPS'ing at .951 versus RHP, but was sub-.200 at .630-OPS versus LHP. Those splits wouldn't be that exceptional for a LH bat, but very unusual for a RH hitter.

Pie Ks but Torres advances to 2nd on a Stolen Base. So I guess he kinda did his job... The Hoff is up.

Hoff batting .451 with RISP and 1.505 OPS.

WOW... Flies out DEEP to center field almost at the wall I think.

Samson is fine defensively. Think David Eckstein. He'll be just fine at SS especially as he continues to get bigger. Remember is just 20 and playing at 150-155 pounds.
