What do the Cubs do with Lieber once he's done with all these rehab starts? Release him? Wait till September when the 40 man roster comes out or use Hart? I just don't see him as much of a help to our team anymore. I'd rather have Eyre on the team then him.

My guess is he'll be activated on September 1 and fight with Marquis for the 8th arm in the bullpen come playoff time.

Lieber never really got a shot this year after having such a strong spring and being effective out of the bullpen. If he gets stretched out again in the minors I could see a team taking a shot at him for a month netting the Cubs another fringe prospect.

Lieber won't be activated until Sept 1st. I'm pretty sure of that.

I'm certain this will never happen but wouldn't Leiber be a good replacement for Howry.

 

Leibs can still be effective vs. right-handers and you know he'll throw strikes.

RH are putting up a 732 OPS against Lieber this year (compared to 644 throughout his career). That is better than Howry, but it's not all that good. And the other problem is he would be an obvious guy to PH with a lefty against, since they have an OPS in excess of 1000, and have always hit him hard.

 

You would never want to bring Lieber in to a game late, or in a situation where the opposing manager is likely to PH with a lefty. So, the only real value would be as a guy you bring in to the 5th/6th inning, when you really don't want to walk anybody, and the hitter is somebody the manager isn't likely to replace with a lefty, but also isn't somebody who kills Lieber (like Pujols).
