B-R's qualifications:

Minimum of 1000 IP, 3000 PA and 100 decisions for career and active leaderboards for rate statistics.

previously, pedro martinez was blowing away the field in the ERA+ department. but mariano rivera has now reached 1000 innings in his career, so he's the leader. Pedro's ERA+: 157. Rivera's ERA+: 197!!!

billy wagner has a 180 ERA+, but he's probably not going to reach the required number of innings or decisions. k-rod is at 186 ERA+, but he still has a long way to go.

I mentioned this back in April when he was on the verge of taking over the top spot:

It really is amazing how dominant he has been. Eight seasons (including this one so far) with an ERA under 2.00. Six seasons (including this one) with a WHIP under 1.00.

They should have different sets of rules for relievers. That's unfair for Pedro. Guy had a ridiculous ERA+ often pitching 7+ innings a game, and probably qualified a few years after he started his career. Mariano did it pitching 1-2 innings a game and qualified at the end of his career.

You hit the nail on the head. Looking at that makes me a bit uncomfortable. It doesn't really seem fair. I guess it's just one of those things like a batting record because of consistency. For example, it took Pete Rose 2,619 more AB's to get 4,191 hits than Cobb took, or like Aaron beating Ruth (almost 4,000 more AB's to get 714).

Well, those arguments are apples and oranges to this one because those are cumulative stats, not rate stats like ERA+.

Not that I think you're wrong, but that doesn't diminish what it means about what Mariano has done. There's been plenty of unhittable relievers that have come and gone that never broke that list. Saying that a reliever is better as a reliever than Pedro was as a starter is a hell of a compliment. Regardless of the standings on that list, I don't think anyone will ever confuse Mariano as being more valuable than Pedro was to his teams.

Also with Pedro you would get to have a "lucky charm midget" running around your clubhouse, which is always fun.
