*Groan*

Seriously, the injuries to the Cubs' minor league pitchers have been unbelievably annoying this year. It's unrealistic to expect everyone to stay healthy, but this year...sheesh.

Casey Coleman's dad and grandfather played in the bigs.

"It was one start and I saw him throw on the side the other day, but he has a real good feel for pitching," Chiefs pitching coach Rich Bombard said. "He knows what he's doing and he has an idea about setting up the hitter."

...

Coleman throws the standard fastball, curve, and change-up. In that regard, he's happy to be in the Cubs system.

"The whole organization preaches throw the fastball," Coleman said. "If you can pitch with the fastball you can move up quickly."

How quickly is anybody's guess, but seeing as how he stayed in Boise just over a month, the talent for a possible quick ascension to baseball history is there.

"He's pretty polished," Bombard said. "That's pitching, the more pitches you can command then you find where your ability takes you."

I remember his father, Joe Coleman Jr. (although he was simply known as Joe Coleman, without the Jr.). He began his major league career with the Senators (now Rangers) in the mid-60s, but his biggest success was with the Tigers in the early 70s. From 1971 through 1973 he won 20, 19, and 23 games. He pitched briefly for the Cubs late in his career (part of the 1976 season), going 2-8, 4.10 in 39 appearances (4 starts). Back then a 4.10 ERA was considered pretty bad (league average that year was 3.82); his ERA+ with the Cubs was 93.

Gooz has given up 3 runs in the first, thanks in part to 2 Daytona errors (Barney and Carter) and a few lucky hits from Vero. The broadcasters seem to think Angel has been pitching well and being very unlucky.

Casey Coleman is putting together a great game though he's losing because he gave up a solo HR:

4 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 6 K. His career high is 7 Ks in Boise.

Brandon Guyer just hit a 2-run HR to give Peoria the lead. He's been on fire since July.

Coleman's final line: 5 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 6 K, 1 HR.

I hope some of Jovan Rosa's double power turn into balls over the fence as he gets older. He just hit his 36th double of the season to go against 4 homers.

Josh Vitters is back in the starting lineup for Boise today so it looks like he was taken out of the game yesterday for his mental error/misplaying a throw from the catcher. Weird.

Josh Vitters with a line single and a run scored thus far. And he just struck out. 1 for 2.

We have some very interesting prospects in the low levels right now. I really think that our system is on the upswing again personally. This particular draft looks like it has tons of potential.

Oswaldo Martinez got the start for Mesa and struck out 2 in his first inning. Best inning of the season for the former TJSer.

They're talking about how Marcus Hatley (who started out red hot, struggled big time, didn't pitch for a while and is now pitching well again) fixed the timing on his windup which helped him get things going again.

Outstanding news, and deserved. Hopefully he can keep up the domination.

It'd be nice if our first rounder had half of the potential that some of the guys in the later rounds had...
