From ESPN via Rotoworld:

Peter Gammons of ESPN reports that the Mariners have traded Arthur Rhodes to the Marlins for Gaby Hernandez.

Rhodes has pitched well in a very limited role out of the Mariners' bullpen, but Hernandez is a solid haul for a 37-year-old situational left-hander. He came to the Marlins in the 2006 deal for Paul Lo Duca and looked like a potential mid-rotation starter long term, but the 22-year-old right-hander has gone just 5-8 with a 6.47 ERA and 71/30 K/BB ratio in 87 2/3 innings between Double-A and Triple-A this season. He'll obviously need to turn things around, but still has decent potential.

this is reminiscent of the Jesse Foppert deal where the Mariners thought they were getting a pitcher with high upside, but the Marlins are in the class with the A's, Cubs, Giants, Braves and Cardinals insofar that they're beyond reproach for scouting pitching. these teams (Zito debacle aside) all have such a great ability for recognizing pitching talent that I don't really have much derision for when they make a move that on the surface looks ill-advised.
