The Pittsburgh Post Gazette reports that the Rays are the "prime suitors" for Xavier Nady.

The newspapers adds that the Yankees, Mets and Braves are also interested in Nady. Along with Damaso Marte, Nady is said to be "most likely to go" among the players being shopped by Pittsburgh.

Would the Pirates call up McCutchen if they trade Nady, or is he still a little bit away from being MLB ready?

Is he going to the Olympic team?

Not as far as I can see.

I don't know. McCutheon is probably ready. Over 400 AAA at bats. But the Pirates may not want to start the arbitration clock on the just 21 year old. McCutheon will most definitely be at the ML level in 2009, though, if I had my guess. Steven Pearce may be a guy that gets a shot first. He's an OF/1B and the Pirates need to see if he can hit ML pitching enough to be an everyday 1b next year.

Yeah, the smart thing would be to call up Pearce and then they can bring McCutchen up in September if they feel like it.

Luck finally is with the Pirates. Before this year I thought Nady was pretty overrated in terms of how often he comes up in trade talks. Now he's a .900+ OPS guy? Wow.

No, McCutch is not going to the olympic team - he was cut.

I think they'll call up Pearce first. He's already on the 40 man roster (McCutch isn't).

Quite frankly, neither one has performed well enough at Indy to make the Pirates want to trade Nady. Having said that, if the offer is good enough, he's gone.

Uh, they'd be dumb not to trade him. He's more of a .785 OPS DH with a crap BB/K ratio than he is this .900 OPS doppleganger.

First of all, I want to be clear here: I'm not advocating not trading Nady. I'm just saying we don't have to trade him. If the offer is not good enough, we should NOT trade him.

Second: McCutcheon has NOT played well enough in AAA to warrant trading a player to open a spot for him. He didn't exactly light it up last year, either. I wouldn't mind him taking some more time in AAA next year. He's only 21. He's going to be a very good player. He's not there yet. As for Pearce, most of the AAA world now knows he really can't hit a curve ball. They moved him up too fast last year. He never really had time at any level to see what happens when the pitchers adjust to him.

If I'm Neal Huntington, I don't trade Nady unless I get some good value.

I was thinking Nady was a FA after this year. While he doesn't have a contract, he also doesn't have the service time.

Right. We have him for one more year. Although after this year, he won't be cheap!

So, if I'm right, the Pirates have Wilson, Bay, Laroche, Nady, and Sanchez up after 2009?

Sanchez, I think, is signed through '10, with a team option for '11. But, correct about the others.

They're looking to sign Bay & Wilson to extensions. They were talking to LaRoche, but those didn't go anywhere. With his second straight year of a horrible start, they probably won't talk to him anymore. The thinking is Nady, as a Boras client, won't sign an extension.

the few times I saw McCutcheon play he reminded me of a faster Rickie Weeks with better contact skills. But with his bat speed and plate discipline, I think he won't take very long to adjust to the MLB level. you can just move McLouth over to RF, and have a really good young OF.

i'd try trading Nady for a 3B though, i don't much like Neil Walker at all.

Yeah, McCutheon will be fine. I'd trade Nady along with Marte to the Rays and try to get Brignac and an arm or 2 close to the majors (Talbot, Hellickson, Houser). Then I would do the Jack Wilson trade to LA. I'd try to get whoever they don't want between Dewitt and Laroche probably straight up and be happy. Keep Bay. The offense probably moves laterally at worst next year going from Nady to McCutheon and Bautista/Mientkiewicz to Dewitt or Laroche. Defense is better. Get a couple arms that can throw in the rotation right away. The Pirates pitching depth is non-existant right now.

There's Brad Lincoln coming off of TJ surgery.

Then there's......

Nothing. Nada. Zip. Zilch. Well, maybe a couple of guys at single A, but they're too far away to really know anything for sure either way.
