Last year, Fontenot started at SS one game, and Lou was so fed up with it after one inning that he put DeRosa there for the rest of the game.

I think he played a couple games at SS during ST this year.

It's hard not to like a guy like Fontenot but even a Soriano level OF would have caught that ball today. I guess that means Harold Reynolds and I agree. Maybe I have a concussion because I actually checked to see who was playing the ESPN game tonight.

Lou deserves major respect for Fontenot's .900+ OPS this year. Fontenot has always been able to mash vs. RHP, and has generally been awful vs. LHP. This year Lou has taken advantage of his splits and it has paid off.

Minor nitpick: Fontenot actually started 3 games at SS last year. He had a game against the Rockies, then started the Friday game of that Brewers series (the Aram homerun game). It was his 3rd start, the next day, when he was pulled after the first inning.

He's definitely not anything more than an emergency option though there at this point.

Eh, I sort of worded that poorly. I didn't mean to say he played there only one game. I was just referring to that one game, if that makes sense. Wasn't sure if he had played more than just that game there.

oh he's a bad shortstop, no question. but he can play there if you need a guy to play there for a couple of innings. he'd probably make the plays hit right to him and screw everything else up. he's also played some third base.

Almost anyone could make the plays hit right to him and screw everything else up. He's a 2B. He might be able to play some 1B, but that's about the extent of it. Sure he could play other positions horribly for a few innings in a pinch but so can 90% of the guys in the league.

Cool. Let's ride the little guy for all he's worth, then if he goes back to being bad relegate him to the bench. A simple plan. I like those

Anyone else pretty satisfied with our middle infielders all around this year? Theriot has obviously given us more than we expected, Cedeno has been solid as a backup 2B/SS and is now looking OK as a pinch hitter. DeRosa is very valuable all around and Fontenot has been very good lately.

If this keeps up,we could let DeRo go after his contract is up after 2009 and lose a solid player, but gain a roster spot of flexibility for a more traditional backup corner OF while not losing a ton at 2B and saving a decent amount on payroll (although I think that will be Theriot's first arby year). Keep it up Mike and Ronny!

Very satisfied. I think we're good there.

When Ronny Cedeno comes to the plate in a big situation, I get a sinking feeling, and that isnt going to change. However, if you look up and down the league at back up short stops, its pretty much the same story. Much like a back up catcher, they're pretty much a defensive specialist. If it came down to it, Id take Ronny over Cesar Izturis or Craig Counsell any day.

So, if it all works out, will Fontenot be the LH DH in the world series? Or will he start at 2B, with DeRosa moving to LF, and Soriano at DH? Since outside of the CF platoon, there is no righty who struggles against RHs, it is tough to get Fontenot in the line-up regularly -- although he essentially got the nod over Edmonds on Saturday.

With everyone rested and healthy, does Fontenot play against all righties?

He didn't so much get the nod over Edmonds as he got the start because Edmonds needed an extra day off due to his multitude of injuries, specifically the knee in this case.
