I'm glad it's happening early, rather than having recurring injuries for several years. He'll still be relatively age appropriate when he's done rehabbing.

Yes, but will he be the same pitcher? That remains to be seen. Sucks this happened, he looked very promising.

You shut your mouth with your logic and level-headedness. The sky is obviously falling.

It might take him a bit to regain his command, but that was his strength before. Some people have added velocity through the surgery and rehab in the past.

One day he can sit around a flaming trash can with Mark Prior and Angel Guzman and talk about the careers that could have been, as Mark Fydrich stumbles out of the darkness and asks for a light.

ah yes, tommy john surgery, the death knell of any pitcher's career.

Now this is a compelling post. It made me laugh and weep at the same time (mostly weeping though). Bravo LLF!

These types of posts get old. No one said anything about the sky falling. It's perfectly ok to be upset when a promising young pitcher has to undergo Tommy John.

2 out of the first 4 posts in response implied his career was over.

Yes it's bad news, but it was entirely predictable after a bicep injury and an elbow injury in the span of 2 months. At least it's better happening early in his career and it's better than shoulder surgery. TJS is not a death knell to one's career.

Tell that to Luke Hagerty.

But yeah, for the most part TJS has become routine and most pitchers come back as strong as (or stronger than before). For the most part its more of a speed bump than anything else. It takes up to a year to rehabilitate and up to another year to fully regain effectiveness, but after that the pitcher is often every bit as good as before.

So which one of those guys had TJS end their career? I'm fairly certain at this point that the list of ML guys who have come back from TJS and been successful in the last 10 years is longer than the list of ML guys who have had a career ended or completely changed from it.

Not that im worried but 19 years old seems young to have TJS.

He's not the youngest guy in the system to have Tommy John surgery this season. 18-year old righty Larry Suarez had Tommy John surgery in April (meaning the Cubs biggest interantional free agent signing in each of the past two seasons have had TJS in the span of 4 months).

dang, I thought it was longer ago that Suarez had that done for some reason

Aren't there high school players who just have it done to get it over with? I think I've heard stories like that in the past.

Dr. Ben Kibler has an office in my town and consults for the Astros, and other systems. He often appears on local sports radio and talks about the growing number of high school pitchers who do it. I don't remember him flat out saying they do it without being injured just to get better, but he does insinuate that some are overly-aggressive in scheduling them in hopes of getting better if they have any arm troubles.
