According to the league's official website, the Chicago Cubs have been scouting San Francisco Giants outfielder Fred Lewis.

 

It should be noted that Chicago's interest at this point is not believed to be all that serious.

Not a bad idea if Edmonds falls off of a cliff, literally or baseball-wise. He's pretty good against righties (hideous against lefties, especfially this year), so he'd make a very solid platoon with Johnson in CF...but he's a LFer. Hasn't he only played a handful of games in CF?

 

Ironically, he's basically the realistic ideal for Pie offensively at this point, just likely much worse defensively if he plays CF.

Don't really understand SF's motivation for unloading Lewis. He's no cornerstone, but he's cheap, serviceable, and not an impediment to someone else in their system.

My only guess is it's to fill in for Soriano while he's out, but why bother with that, Soriano's only gonna be gone for another 3-4 weeks or so (hopefully) and Lewis is performing well enough that he might cost us someone of at least a little value. What do we do with him after? Pinch hitter off the bench vs. righties?

Guys, we are going for it this year and have some holes to fill. Accordingly, we probably have scouts at every single ML game looking at and taking notes on anyone and everyone who plays.
