Yeah, I know I'm whacky to talk about this with Edmonds hitting the way he has been, but I just wanted to throw this out there and see what everyone thinks. I like what I've seen from Patterson in the early going. He seems like he knows what he is doing at the plate. He has drawn some walks and his minor league IsoD is encouraging. He's also got speed and I can't imagine it would be that tough to convert him to a CF. Even if Edmonds continues to hit and holds down CF the remainder of this season, it's very likely he won't be around next season. Of all the prospects we have, Patterson is the one I'd most like to hang onto and he'd give us a cheap option at CF who could also replace DeRosa at 2b or be the "supersub" with his ability to play multiple positions. I think he could be a .275/.335/.450 kind of player in the majors, and that's pretty decent production if he's inexpensive.

Don't get me wrong, he's not untouchable. If he's the guy that Cleveland has to have for Sabathia, I trade him without a second thought. I'd probably also be willing to part with him in a Burnett/Bedard/Harden/Harang deal, but I'd try to get the other team to grab someone else instead.

EDIT: Oops I meant to put this in Cubs discussions not transactions. Guess I wasn't paying attention. Please go ahead and move this if it needs to be moved.

Yeah, I agree with this just because he isn't a legitimate defensive option at second from what I've heard. His bat isn't such that you necessarily have to get him in the lineup yet, but he's a no-brainer with a few of our guys hurt.

I dont know about this year, but maybe in the future. I cant see Edmonds being here past this year, and if anything, Reed Johnson might get a 1 year just while they wit for a replacement to mature. If Pie doesnt shape up, he could be our guy, or if nothing else, he could take over second in 2010.

I would like to see him and Hoffpauir both stay in the bigs. Id take both over Cedeno, Fontenot, and Murton.

i like how patterson went from worthless to a potential starter in one weekend series.

I guess Id have to agree. refer to the startrs of Angel Pagans 2007 start, as wel as Mike Fontenot, Matt Murton, and Felix Pies big league starts. Even Cedeno started off pretty good when he first came up. We'll see if E-Patt and Hoff are the real deal.

+1

I don't expect to see him here beyond the trade deadline.

EPatt isn't going to hit enough to be an offensive CF, and he's not a good enough defender to be a strength there. While he's certainly a feasible option there, I'd rather not try to make room for him in CF, so to speak.

Watch your mouth. Murton has a track record as a legit MLB player after 850+ ABs. Pie and Pagan do not belong anywhere near him as of yet.

.296/.364/.451 is respectable and should command some trade value to a team short on OFs like ours, given the managers have a brain, unlike ours.

Yet, Hendry has been openly dangling Murt ever since he signed Fukudome and no one seems to be beating down our door for him.

The Padres are the only team that seems interested, but they dont have anything we need, that theyd be willing to send us for Murt. In the end, he'll probably be either part of a package deal or else a mercy trade for a few mid level prospects just to send him somewhere where he has a chance.

There are few players that are available that have teams beating down the door to get them. However, there is a large number of players that teams could use, and would include in package deals. Murton has some value as a marginal regular player or bench guy, and would add value to a deal on our side.

The Padres might do Wolf for a package that includes Murton but we're probably trying to aim higher than Wolf on our trade targets.

I think e-patt could be a decent, cheap, centerfield option but as many have noted he probably wont be around come trade time. wasnt he the shortstop a Georgia Tech? Too bad he couldnt stick there.

As far as the Matt Murton love, yeah hes been ok for us but his poor defense and alarming decrease in power make him nothing more than a bench guy. I gotta believe with his build that his swing can be tweaked/changed to generate more power. He puts the ball on the ground more than most which means hes turning over on the ball way too often. Until he figures it out hes no more than a AAAA guy.

Guy with a career major league OPS of .815, OPS+ of 106 and EqA of .272 and .276 the last 2 seasons (including 2 half seasons of OPS over .900) is AAAA?

When he can only play in LF with below average defense, it's close to that.

Not really. AAAA guys can't hack it in the majors. Murton can, and has. He's no all-star, but he's a perfectly capable major league contributor.

You can't be serious, TT.

Now we're getting into semantics. Murton provides below average offense and below average defense at one position, the easiest to fill on the diamond. Whether or not that makes him "AAAA" or not depends on your definition, but he's fungible, and probably doesn't have a large role on a good team.

All evidence to the contrary.

For a left fielder? Absolutely.

He was 24.
