This could be a good thing for the Cubs.

The Cardinals are projecting lefthander Mark Mulder for a start in next weekend's series against the Kansas City Royals, pending a successful "light" outing tonight with Class AAA Memphis.

Manager Tony La Russa and pitching coach Dave Duncan insisted Sunday that a "good chance" exists for Mulder to make his first major-league start since being sidelined last August with shoulder discomfort that led to a second rotator cuff operation. Mulder is on a rehab assignment that included a difficult outing Thursday against Albuquerque.

The Cardinals have moved Matt Clement to the Triple-A bullpen.

Time is running out on his 30-day rehab assignment, and he'd allowed 11 earned runs over his last 13 innings as a starter. "Clement has had some good outings but has not been able to do it every fifth day," GM John Mozeliak said.

Clement is the only rehabbing Cardinal that I'm pulling for (so long as that success doesn't cost the Cubs).

then again, maybe not.

Mark Mulder-S-Cardinals Jun. 23 - 9:39 pm et

Mark Mulder was scratched from his scheduled rehab start on Monday night due to back stiffness.

It was thought Mulder could be activated this weekend, but that probably won't happen now. He's not exactly a sure thing to upgrade the team's rotation anyway. Mitchell Boggs will continue to start while Mulder rehabs.

Judging by the limited amount of time I've seen Boggs pitch, they're probably better off sticking with him for awhile anyway.

He's trash too

Yeah, but he's trash that the league hasn't figured out quite yet. LaRussa's become a master at putting together winning seasons by using up guys like that and then throwing them away once they "get figured out."

Mulder's a known quantity. I doubt they get any kind of boost from him, though it's hard to count anything out with St. Louis these days.
