Jodie Meeks on Kentucky dropped 54 points on Tennessee tonight.

Just about to post this.

He hit 15-of-22 shots including 10-of-15 3-pointers. Also hit all 14 free throws. Most points in a single game in Kentucky history. And looking at his stats, he's also had a 46 point game (hit 9 threes), and games of 39, 37 and 32 (hit 8 threes).

i love pomeroy's new thing that breaks down what style teams play. i will never, ever pick a team to win a championship if they rely very heavily on the three. i waded into some of pomeroy's stuff to see how this theory goes: looking at the last 5 champs, none ranked higher than 149th in points via the three versus total points. only two out of the past 20 final four teams ranked higher than 114th in 3 point field goal attempts versus total attemps.

Thats interesting. Where did you go to 'get more info on pomeroy's stuff'? I'm honestly curious to read about it. Please dont give me a link to google.com.

OU is one of those teams. Awesome. When OU takes more than like 18 3s in a game, they seem to keep the other team in the game a lot onger than they should be. I think they took 22 3s in the loss @Arkansas.

it may be tougher to go with that rule of thumb this year. UNC and pitt don't shoot many threes, wake (340th) and uconn (337th) are close to dead last (344 teams) in 3PA/FGA. the highest-ranking team that relies very heavily on the three is arizona state, and i have them pegged to be a fraud. butler is also way up there, like they are every year, but they're not a team that i'd consider a final four threat anyway.

That could be the Final Four.

The old record was 53 points, set by Dan Issel way back in the 1969-70 season. Issel also had a 51-point game the same season. The ESPN game announcers are talking Meeks up as a possible national player of the year contender.

And not mentioned in the previous posts was that the game was at Tennessee (who had a long home winning streak going), and Kentucky won 90-72.

That was sick not only did he only take 22 shots, but he also had like 4 assists. Plus they blew out Tennessee. Those highlights were really cool to watch

John Gasaway of Basketball Prospectus posted an article (comically premature edition) on the early season analysis of the Big East, Big Ten and Pac 10.

He makes tons of notes, but some things I noticed specifically:

- As everyone expected, the two fastest-paced teams in the Big Ten are...Illinois and Northwestern..?

- Every team in the Big East plays at a faster pace than any team in the Big Ten.

- Every team that has played DePaul, Indiana or Oregon State is going to be subject to a statistical boost at this point in the season (well...except USC).

Also, BP (is there a better abbreviation for Basketball Prospectus?) has posted their first round of top 25 rankings. The top 6 is all ACC/Big East, and 7 of the top 8.

i have to question that. northwestern? most of their games have seen scores in the 50s and 60s. pomeroy has their adjusted tempo at 3rd slowest in the conference, ahead of only wisconsin and iowa (which is 2nd slowest in the country).

That's just based on conference play, and Northwestern has only played 3 games while giving up more than 70 pts in 2 of those games.

penn state and michigan state are both in the double bonus... with about 9 minutes left in the second half. the officiating has been terrible both ways, just way too many off-the-ball fouls being called.

i think my biggest beef with ed dechellis has been penn state's defense. minnesota shot 60% and michigan state is better than 50% tonight. you let other teams shoot that well in a halfcourt-dominated conference like the big ten. this year penn state is 51st in offensive efficiency but just 132nd in defensive efficiency. last year they were 89/141, 2007 they were 81/171, 2006 they were 73/169. i think there's been a lack of attention on the defense which results in them being just about the worst defensive team in the big ten every year.
