I like your coach a lot as well, but even he would tell you that you need good players to win. Those are generally the guys that have the stars next to their names when they are being recruited.

i just don't see iowa being relevant in any big ten discussion. if it happens, i'll be extremely surprised. there are just other teams that have more going for themselves.

I really think that it will be OSU and Illinois going for it in a few years. They are both going to be loaded. But, I also think that Purdue, Wisky, MSU, and even Minnesota will be pretty good again. It's exciting to have the big ten getting good again.

Matt Gatens in a 20 minute sample is as good as advertised by the Iowa fans here.

Yep, he is an all around solid player. Basically another Adam Haluska with a little more of an inside game. The other freshman looked pretty good too. Tucker can stroke from outside.

As I said earlier, this team is already much better than last year. There isn't one thing I can think of were they have not improved. Maybe the post depth could be a problem, but really, last year our 3rd big man was Kurt Looby. In a year or 2 we should be competitive for the top 3 in the BT.

In two years Ohio State and Illinois will be loaded with talented. Loaded. Plus Wisky, MSU, and Purdue will still be very good. I can't see Iowa being a top three team.

I can understand that. You are an illini fan.

spare me, and you aren't the biggest hawkeye homer (and that's saying a lot) on the planet, i guess?

if it werent for the god damn refs, the illini would be undefeated. thats all I know.

What the heck are you talking about?

i think purdue is there to stay, i think msu is going nowhere, osu gets every single good player on earth, wisco will continue to contend with whomever they bring in and they're fairly loaded with incoming players, and minnesota is absolutely on their way back up in terms of recruiting. there just isn't any room for iowa at the table, although it would be good for the big ten.

the hardeman hit was legal and illinois still won that game, so it didn't cost them anything.

I don't get how Thad does it. He just looks at the top 25 list and goes. I want you, you, you, and you. Then he gets them. It's amazing.

makes me wish we would have hired him when we had the chance, but oh well.

Matt Gatens in a 20 minute sample is as good as advertised by the Iowa fans here.

He's a white, less athletic version of Tyler Smith. Matt is a solid athlete but not on Smith's level although Gatens may be a little better outside shooter. But what makes Tyler special is his feel for the game, unselfishness and ability to make the "right" play so often. He's going to start every game for 4 years barring injury and will be an all Big Ten player as a veteran.

I agree with the Illinois fans in this discussion though. I think Lick is a hell of a coach and is bringing in players who can move the ball, shoot, play smart and defend. With that said, the Big Ten has a great collection of coaches who are bringing in some studs. You can't just consistently beat that with system guys.

I think that collection can get you top 5 finishes and trips to the NCAA's but to break into the top of the league you need to add a few top 100 guys every couple years. That's what Bo has done at Wisky. Solid core of 3-star guys who fit in well with some studs sprinkled in. Gatens is one and Creekmur in 2010 has a decent chance of being another. We need more.

This team is improved and will finish above .500. I say 9-4 non-conference, 8-10 in the Big Ten this year.

and please, don't accuse me of being a homer, ask illiniguy about our arguments concerning eric gordon last year.

Yep, it's true. He was very objective. Much more than I could stomach being.

We probably would have lost him to IU though when they hired Sampson. At least that's what I tell myself to stay sane.

Gatens is a stud. You guys in on Harrison Barnes?

Who isn't in on Harrison Barnes? :)

touche, I meant to say. Have you guys made any progress on Barnes? Is UCLA recruiting him Raisin?

Yeah, definitely. He and Josh Smith are the big pie in the sky targets for UCLA in 2010.

Would like to think so but I don't see it. Depends who you listen to though. The ESPN basketball recruiting guy says it's UNC out in front with ISU second and Iowa a close third. He does still make trips to Iowa City and loves the coaches.

But the guy has his pick of anyone in the country. What I hear from a pretty decent source is it's UNC, Duke, Kansas, ISU or Iowa right now. Smart money is on one of the 3 out of state schools. He's a smart, level-headed kid who doesn't have stars in his eyes and keeps things pretty private.

Land him and a top 3 finish can become realistic. Like I said I don't see it though.

i just couldn't player hate on that kid, as much as i despise him with every fiber of my being.

i love the fact that our 2010 is done and we have 3 top 30 players already. that's got to be the best recruiting class in illini history--although i think barnes is better than richmond.

He is right now. Richmond looks more like a kid still though, not that it means a lot. As for the class it has to be our best. Our other good ones were littered with guys who were very underrated. Gill wasn't highly thought of at all and Deron Williams was what in the 50's?

Have you seen Meyers play?

If ISU loses the best player ever to come out of Ames to Iowa bad things are going to happen here. Reading between the lines, it sounds like he's not staying in the state, and I don't blame him at all. He should make the decision he thinks will be best for his career. Still holding out a little bit of hope he stays at home though.

Yeah he's probably heading out of the state.

As far as being best for his career I disagree with many on that. He should go to UNC, Duke or Kansas if he wants a good shot to win a national championship.

I don't think going to Iowa State or Iowa would hurt his NBA chances. K-State had Walker but not much else and it didn't hurt Beasley. He'll be a featured guy wherever he goes, but he'd without a doubt be THE guy at ISU or Iowa. If you have a game like Harrison the NBA doesn't care if your team only wins 21 games and when you're a top 5 recruit nationally they're going to see you play just as much at one of the in-states as they would at a national power.

I think the early leaders on Barnes are KU, Florida, and .... Duke maybe? There was a third team. I think it was Duke. The recruiting expert on KU's scout board was just talking about it.

EDIT: It was Duke. Those are the three teams that have been on him longest, the recruiting guys say. (Outside of the Iowa schools.) But it's so early, they expect that leader board to get a bit more crowded.

Was that before UNC offered? They were the last remaining power to offer (somewhat recently) and according to my guy they jumped near the top pretty quickly.

The rest of what you said is correct though.

From what I've read, UNC has to be considered a solid threat.
