The schedule has the Cubs playing the Rays in Tampa Bay Thursday night with a day game again White Sox on Friday. I thought major league rules prohibited this sort of scheduling.

Plus they have the useless Hall Of Fame game Monday.

Wierd.

One of those times has to be a mistake (even though the other teams' web sites show the same times). There's NO WAY they can legitimately schedule a team for a night game (which could end very late if there's a rain delay or extra innings), then have the team fly back and play the next afternoon. Totally out of the question.

The Cubs probably had a choice to make Friday a night game and declined. The HOF game is useless and I know only bad things will come of it. I see ESPN has thrown in another Cubs game for Weds night.

Hopefully only the backups and scrubs play in the HOF game and they all kinda half-ass it.

The CBA prohibits them playing more than 20 day in a row w/o a day off. Due to special circumstances that can change but has to be approved by lots of folks up and down the chain.

Quite a few teams come into Wrigley every year and play a day game after a night game. Was it last year or the year before that a west coast team got into the hotel about six hours before first pitch?

Actually, the neighborhood won't allow Friday night games (except for playoffs).

And the Cubs and Sox have a "friendly agreement" to not play night games anymore unless scheduled by ESPN. This is due to several drunken, rowdy, brawling crowds at the Cell in the early years of the series.

The most recent time I recall that happening was 2004, when the Cubs went nearly a month without a day off at the end of the season. I'm still convinced that was at least part of the reason for the last week collapse. That was due to the hurricane in Florida that postponed an entire Cubs-Marlins series.

FWIW, the odds of a rain delay Thursday night are exactly zero. That doesn't make it any better though.

True; I forgot about the dome. There could still be "free baseball," though.

The rule is that on get away day a day game must be scheduled if the visiting team has an off day the next day and the visting team is going home for their next game.

If the visiting team is going home to play a game the next day, then the home team is not required to schedule a day game unless the travel time it takes the visiting team to get home is more than a particular time window. I am wanting to say it's 2 or 2 1/2 hours but don't quote me on that. Travel time is determined by the flight and not from the time the game ends until the club arrives in their home city...i.e, what is often called the Cubs rule since the Cubs are the only team which plays day games at home on Fridays.

With Chicago being in the center of the country for the most part, it is usually only the west coast where the games are required to be day games. Some teams are accomodating if the Cubs ask them to make the change which they often do but most are not.

No the Cubs did not have a choice to make the Friday game a night game. Night games are not allowed via the agreement with the neighborhood on Fridays or Saturdays. Exception would be postseason.

Isn't the Cubs Sox game on Sunday Night baseball? Could get ugly that night.

Next two Sunday nights actually. Cubs and Sox HATE when ESPN does that to them. It is why Sundays are allowed via the agreement with the neighborhood. Those Sunday night games are included in the 30 night games the Cubs schedule each year. They leave some leeway by scheduling less than 30 night games for just such a thing. ESPN is only allowed two Sunday night games at Wrigley per season unless that has changed recently usually one before ASB and one after the ASB.
