It's nice that the Brewers lost, but I'm not too concerned about them at this point.

Nor were the Mets concerned with the Phillies in late September.

Anyone can make a run, and anyone can have a bit of down spell. Pretty much everyone is still alive, except the Pirates (and probably the Reds)

EDIT: Whoa, and probably the Astros too, I hadn't seen how far down teh standings they've fallen.

Are people still scoreboard watching anyone but the Cardinals? Really?

That said, I almost think we'd be better off if the Cardinals beat the Phils, as we may well be battling the Phils for home field when it's all said and done, which will be huge.

I'm not rooting for the Cards, but it's win-win either way in that series.

I actually like the talent the Brewers have and that is still coming Gamel and LaPorta. So yes I am still following them. Once they get rid of Yost, they will be scary.

I'm hoping the Brewers get just a little closer so they will make a shortsighted trade involving one of those in order to get back into the race.

Gotta love brewerfan.net:

And you know this because??? Look, I don't give a rats behind what the #s say or what the %'s are, but one thing I do know, the Cubs are not as good as their record. They are no way the best team in baseball. Do you really and truly believe that Ryan "gas can" Dumpster will pitch this way all year, or that they will continue to win games by getting HBP with the bases loaded?? Or Reed Johnson(who is terrible against righties) homering off the best righty in the AL in Roy Halliday?? At the end of the day they are still the Cubs and the baseball gods will have their say before this is done. Oh yeah and still 10 games head to head vs. the Cubs. 7 at MP I might add.

Do you suppose that fellow realizes that if the standings remain as they are now, the Cubs could lose... what, 7? of those 10 remaining games and still hold a lead over the Brewers?

I'm also a big fan of "they're still the Cubs," because we all know the Brewers have the long and distinguished history of success that gives their fanbase free reign to be talking about the fated fortunes of other teams.

Those same Cubs also forced the Brewers into blowing a huge lead in June and won the division.

You can't make a statement like that one year removed from blowing a division they probably should have won.

I'm well aware of this; even with the myriad of ways in which the '08 Cubs are better than the '07 Cubs, I'm still waiting for the other shoe to drop and for us to simply stop playing this well. It has to come at some point, because I'm still personally not sure we really are this good.

My point was more that I can't at all see what gives Brewers fans, of all people, currency to run their mouths like this.

that's because the mets' chance of missing the playoffs was very small. they had an epic collapse, mostly due to terrible luck and in small part due to the fact that willie randolph is a lousy manager.

the cubs are as good as their record. the offense is legitimately excellent, as is the bullpen, and the starting pitching is solid. if anything is likely to fall off, it's the performance of the #2 starter (to this point, dempster). but i've seen suggestions on other websites that the cubs are likely to fade, and this simply isn't the case. the cubs are one of the best teams in baseball, if not the best, and their play to this point in the season has reflected the caliber of team that they have.

Assuming the two teams were equal over the rest of the games, the Cubs could go 1-9 in those game against the Brewers and still be 0.5 games ahead.

btw, if anyone has paid attention to my presence on this board over the past couple of years, you would've noticed that i'm far from a cubs' kool-aid drinker. in fact, i tend to be quite pessimistic with this team. so what's it say that i feel very confident about their ability to at least make the playoffs? draw your own conclusions there.

I'm probably scoreboard watching the Marlins and Brewers most right now. Only because they are the teams that could possibly keep the Cubs from a playoff spot. At the same time, I'm not exactly concerned with them right now. I'm just glad to see that the Cubs have opened a 7.5 game lead on that spot, and I hope we can widen that out a little farther.

I have a hard time seeing 2 of the 3 teams of the Cardinals, Marlins, and Brewers all getting to 90 wins, so if the Cubs can get there, that should be enough. Of course, I think it's also certainly possible that the Cubs win the division going away and have 95+ wins. It is nice though that the Cubs have a little cushion, and the fact that at least 2 teams have to play well enough to catch the Cubs, not just one.
