i've seen other forums do it, and it saves us the 2 seconds it takes to click on a link to visit the youtube video. i say this should be implemented.

This is for personal reasons, but I'd strongly prefer not doing this. Personally, where I work they block video, including youtube. They also track people that attempt to hit it. So every time I open a thread where a youtube video is embedded, I'd get dinged. It would mean that I'd have to stop surfing NSBB while I'm at work, which I'd obviously rather not do.

I'm sure there's other people out there that would have issues with embedded video while at work as well. There's nothing wrong with links.

Just speaking for myself here.

^^ I have something similar here. Youtube is not banned, but they track the usage of Youtube videos. If the number of clicks gets too high, they claim that people are taking advantage of the internet, and will ban all Youtube websites.

A 2 second savings ... ?

A click is a click, whether it's on the URL or on the "Play" button on the video. No embedded videos on NSBB, please.

Wouldn't it slow the site down considerably too?

It might slow down individual loading of pages that happen to have those linked for some people, but the nsbb server doesn't care. The videos wouldn't be hosted here...they'd be hosted elsewhere and linked here.

Is embedding a video different from pasting the link? I'm pretty sure there isn't a difference.

Yes. Embedding the video means that the video loads in the forum. Pasting a link gives you the choice of whether or not you want to view it.

I'm confused. All of the major video sites, you have to click on the embedded videos to get them to play. They don't play automatically.

Correct - it doesn't play automatically. The most popular phpbb3 youtube tag just inserts youtube via flash. I've never heard of any work blocking issues using this tag, but I can understand not wanting to risk it.

Youtube.com, and all content from that site, and other video sites like it, are blocked where I work, and from reactions from others, it's blocked there too. It doesn't matter whether it's playing or not. For example, when I do a google search, I have to be careful, because any youtube links show thumbnails that are blocked for me. It's still content from an unapproved site that's you're forcing on people. There's no reason to do that, when a URL will suffice.

If it's just me, that's one thing...but others seem to feel the same way about this.

I can't speak for Tim though...this is just my opinion.

Not to beat this to death, but how is this different from someone pasting a youtube link on NSBB? What I posted above is basically the same thing.

Ok, lets say in the Soccer thread, so and so posts an embedded youtube video like you explained.

When I go to that thread, not knowing that the post is there, my computer will download at least the player and the initial image file, or the swf, or however that works...the point is that it's downloading some kind of content from youtube.com. Only here where I work (I don't know about others, so I won't presume to speak for them, but they've indicated concerns as well) anything from youtube.com is blocked. So I'll get a red x as the content won't download, and my userid gets logged on the proxy for each one of those. Currently nothing on NSBB is blocked (if I have avatars and sigs turned off) so I'm ok. But I would have to stop coming to NSBB at work if these were allowed.

The URL's are just url's. If I go to a thread and see that a youtube.com URL is linked, I can skip it and if I really want to see it, go to it when I get home.

Images sometimes can be an issue, but that's a risk I take...it's not often that they're blocked, and so I'm not terribly concerned about it. But videos are a big no no due to bandwidth issues.

I'm not suggesting that site policy be made specifically from my concerns, but that's why I personally don't want to see this.

Can we put it to a vote with a poll to see what the masses think?

If it was more of a "niche" request, fine, but embedding videos is such a common online feature now, it seems somewhat silly we can't do it here.

You're free to start a poll. Ultimately of course, it's Tim's decision....

Personally I don't think that's necessary. Even if a majority would be in favor of it I believe even a minority with work issues should be sufficient to prevent it. As others have pointed out, it's no big deal to click on a URL. Embedded videos here are totally unnecessary.
