They redid the 2005 draft on Baseball Tonight and Fernando Vina took Jacoby Ellsbury ahead of Upton, Zimmerman, Braun, Tulowitzki and Bruce. Needless to say, I am not surprised.

Fernando Vina, luminary of the game that he is. I would have been far more interested in the segment had they given a "pick" to Gammons or Kurkjian or one of the guys who actually have a solid clue as to what they're talking about.

I think they tell them what to say. Any other media outlet outside of ESPN would not have even mentioned Ellsbury with the rest of those guys.

Dudes a gamer. He's the spark that gets the rest of the team going. Those other guys may have the numbers, but players like Ellsbury are invaluable. So on and so forth, rabble rabble rabble.

So does being a "gamer" not add any value to a team?

they are told what to say about 50% time. At least that's what an NFL ESPN expert that I know has told me. Ellsbury is good but the others are once in a generation type talents Ellsbury is just an all-star caliber player. In other words the others could one day if they pan out make the HoF Ellsbury if he pans out will be an all-star 4 or 5 years.

Vina gushed about him because he's a "table setter/catalyst/etc.", all the things he envisioned himself as being during his playing days. This is the same as Schlereth fixated on offensive linemen, Jaworski fixated on QBs, Brantley fixated on closers and so on.

"ellsbury is a gamer" is how a moron would describe jacoby ellsbury. a more intelligent analysis would point out that he has the second-highest VORP on the red sox and a .294 EqA despite being unlucky on balls in play. he's got solid extra base power with the ability to hit around 10 home runs a year, and is a very good baserunner who will help his team by stealing about 80 bases at an 85% success rate. and he plays plus defense in center field.

If that draft were held today there could be a Red Sox that goes really high, but it would be Buchholz. I still think the only big mistake in that draft was Ricky Romero. I would still take Alex Gordon over the two Ryan's.

5 guys taken in the same draft, just 3 years ago, are all "once in a generation type talents"?

Which is why I assumed that's how they described him on BBTN

Who's more of a "gamer": ARod or Erstad? If its Erstad, then no, it doesn't.

yes. I said if the pan out. The main thing of what I said was guys like Upton, Braun, etc. have a higher ceiling than Ellsbury. Like I said before if they pan out and get the most of their ability they will be HoF if Ellsbury does the same he is a multi time all-star but not likely HoF. He plays good but not dominant defense, he can't hit more than 20 hr's, compiles a good average but not anywhere close to one that would get him 3,000 hits. The one thing he does better than just about everyone in the league is steal bases. That won't get him in the HoF. Meanwhile Braun could be a 500 HR guy, and 3,000 hit guy. Upton has speed, power, and a very good arm for the outfield. You getting my point. I never said all five will be "once in a generation." Not all if any will pan out but they have the chance to take over for the Manny's, Griffey's, and so on who will all likely be out of the league in 5 years.

Not to mention the fact that he's won a World Series already.

So have Coco Crisp and Anthony Reyes, want either of them?

I can probably kick their ass in RBI Baseball any day, but I don't see teams lining up to pay me millions of dollars. What kind of BS is that?
