Why were Soto and Lee taken out?

The Cubs were getting killed 9-1 at that point and both needed the rest.

It turned out to be the right move, weirdly enough.

Well, not to split hairs, but just because it worked doesn't mean it was the right move.

I'm not aware of a whole lot of research quantifying the advantages of resting players or playing bench players (I'm pretty sure there's been more on the latter). That said, if there is any real advantage to resting starters periodically or getting extra at-bats for bench players, it was the right move regardless of outcome.

All in all, I'm just happy the Cubs won. What a day!

From the MLB.COM blurb on the game:

Scott Eyre (2-0) got the win in one-third of an inning of relief.

Hahahah. That's the kicker. Of course Eyre got the win! And in 1/3 inning of relief too. Perfect cherry on the top of this game.

I had to watch the gamecast at work. I minimized the window when it was 9-1. I checked back periodically and saw Kosuke and Edmonds had homered. I thought, okay, just padding the stats. Then i had some work to do, came back, and saw 10-9. I couldn't believe it. There is no quit in this team. Unbelievable.

What a game! Down 9-1, Cubs basically concede the game by resting Lee and Soto (which I agreed with, BTW; I wanted them rested so the Cubs could win Saturday and Sunday and take 3 of 4), and still they win. Something magical is definitely happening when the comeback is largely due to home runs from the likes of Edmonds and Blanco. To me this has much the same feel as the famous Sandberg game against St. Louis in 1984.

Something BIG is happening this year, folks.

Fair enough. We had a favorable outcome as a result of the moves. Hindsight it 20/20 and all that. :P

Also, amusingly enough, today is Scott Eyre's birthday.

Regardless of the outcome of today's game I think it was the right move from the standpoint of managing for the series. I would have gladly taken losing today, then winning tomorrow and Sunday to take 3 of 4 (although I'll much more gladly take a sweep).

I'll throw together a video later tonight with highlights and maybe some NSBB quotes from the GDT.

"Who Killed Tangerine" needs to be played in the background

Aaron Cook makes us nervous.

Lilly is horrible, we need a No. 2 starter at the deadline.

Oh, cute, fake rally.

Hey, this is getting cool. If Edmonds comes through, I might not hate him.

OMG!!!!! WOW!!!!!

Marmol makes Pedro Martinez in his prime look like Ryan O'Malley.

We should leave Marmol for the ninth.

If it's Wood, we'll be okay if he doesn't put the leadoff man on.

Oh crud.

Whew.

Cubs win!

I just saw the replay of Edmonds' home run, and as if by instinct I started getting pissed that he was sprinting around the bases as usual. Then I realized that he was doing it for us :(

you might've overreacted with the like-o-meter... sounds like his polling numbers are lower.
