I can't bring myself to pick a guy who only plays one out of every 5 games to be the MVP. I go with Marmol. I think our bullpen goes into a tailspin without him in it.

First vote for Geovany Soto. Really?

Dude is one of, if not the best, offensive catchers in baseball and combines that with great blcoking ability behind the plate and a great arm. Why no love for Soto?

The guy who has pitched 81 innings isn't eligible for you, but the guy with 34 IP is the winner?

I picked "other". There honestly isn't 1 guy you can give this to. You take away Z, Dempster, Fukudome, Lee, Soto, or Ramirez off this team and we're a good 3 games worse. Maybe Soriano, too, although he has given away a few games w/his defense, he has singlehandedly won a few as well.

It's nice to have a very good team, not just 1, 2, or 3 great guys (See 1998 Sosa & Wood) or even 2003 (Wood & Prior).

Edit: Include Marmol as well, he has "saved" at least 4 or 5 games by getting out of ridiculous jams.

I went with Soto. He's been the most productive offensive player, but Aramis will eventually pass him and be this team's MVP. Never thought I'd say this, but if Derrek Lee was more patient this year, it might be him in a runaway. He's the 6th most patient Cub of the 9 everyday players (Reed Johnson qualifies). If he was at his typical BB/PA, his OPS would be the team's best. Zambrano also makes a strong case. Marmol doesn't play as much as the others on this list, but his time on the field has been as important than anyone else's, and more productive.

2007 catchers: 239/304/369/673

2008 catchers: 305/392/532/924

Soto also has more homers already this year than the combination of Barrett/Hill/Bowen/Blanco/Kendall all of last year.

i picked Zambrano. at this point, it seems unlikely the Cubs will ever have an extended losing streak while he's healthy

Yup. While Zambrano has more innings, Marmol still has many more appearances. Look at it this way....which of these is more valuable- 7 innings in a row in a blowout game, or 7 innings spead out over a couple weeks, all in crucial situations?

Look at it this way....that's an extreme example. Nowhere near all Zambrano's appearances are blowouts. Not all Marmol's innings are in crucial situations. How many times has he been in games with 4 run leads? Also, if Zambrano is pitching in a blowout, he's probably a big reason why. It's probably because he has held the opposition to very little offense and probably has contributed to the run scoring for his own offense. When you take into account Zambrano's bat, Marmol can't touch him.
