so, I have just got back into the game recently after 10 years of not touching a club(I caddied in high school and also played a tad bit)....I have taken some lessons which have helped and been out to the range..here is my issue...

I have really gotton precent decent with my driver(I can hit 240-260 consistently and somewhat straight)...but I am just terrible, I mean terrible with my irons....especially the low irons(2-4), I hit my 7 iron about as far as I do those...what could I be doing wrong? I can't can any distance and shank them most of the time.

Well the lowest ones are obviously the hardest to hit. I'm no expert, but I'll just say this: get hybrids.

yeah, that is my next move..lol

That's why they invented the 5 and 7 woods.

What about when I'm in the thick, and still 200+ from the green? yeah I need to get some hybrids.

I've just gotten back into playing this summer after about 10 years. Was pretty good when I was in high school. It's harder now, ten years on. Imagine that.

Anyway, I'm terrified of playing in these scrambles and other work-related things because I don't want to embarass myself. I don't even like going when I know courses will be busy because I don't like people (I don't know) watching.

Played yesterday and it was really enjoyable because we weren't forced or waiting on groups ahead of us. And managed to play well. Got a couple of pars, which for me is good.

Don't be afraid to play. Most golfers are bad. A good percentage talk a fantastic game, but when it gets down to it, very few are that good.

Some days are better than others, however :D

So I decide to regrip my clubs. I cut the grips off my clubs and went to Dick's sporting goods to but some replacements. I see a sign there that says they'll re grip clubs for $2.99 plus the price of the grips!

Best 3 bucks ever spent.

Has anyone gone to Dick's to get fitted for clubs? I'm starting to wonder if regular shafts might be better for me these days.

I played in a scramble a few weeks back. Our foursome finished 8 under for 18 holes. I had two shots count, both 50ish yard pitches.

I love scramble golf.

Was that good for 8th place? Around here any time there's a scramble the winning team breaks 60.

Want to really have some fun, try this format: 2 man scarmble on the front 9 alternating shot on the back. Alternating shot is a true test of friendship. There's no worse feeling in the world than when your partner hits you 2nd shot to the frings on a par 5 and then you flub the chip shot leaving him a 10 foot birdie put.

Well, I bought my new clubs back in May, and outside of getting to the range a few times, I hadn't had a chance to use them. Took them out today to the course on campus for 9 holes, a course I've never played before, and shot a 51. Let's just say that my previous best on 9 holes was 65 (shhhh, I'm terrible). I'm still amazed at some of the shots I was able to pull off. Only topped the ball a few times, where I would almost always top it with my old clubs. Guess that little extra length helped.

My chaotic schedule lightens up dramatically after this weekend and the temperatures are dropping from 100 to about 80. I think I'll get busy on the courses again very soon.

$2.99 to install, plus the cost of the grip is pretty steep. Re-gripping your clubs is pretty easy (and cheaper), once you get the hang of it. All you need is a vice, a shaft protector, double sided tape, and mineral spirits (at least that's what I use, but you can even use soap and water, although it takes a bit longer to dry).

I know the Dick's around here is filled with idiots in their golf department. I'd make sure that the store near you has a PGA teaching pro that has some experience in fitting clubs, and not just going off the the launch monitor indoors. If not, try to find a local golf shop with guys that know what they're doing. Another option would be to attend a demo day at a local golf course/driving range. There are usually golf club company tech reps there that are well-versed in fitting clubs. Of course I may be a bit biased with the latter, considering I work in the golf "industry".

I just traded in my driver for a barely used Taylor Made Super Quad & $53 :-). Bad economy means some great deals to be found. Trying it out tomorrow morning.

Just played at University Park in Florida

It was amazing and affordable. Only cost $79.00 for 18 holes and it's rated in the top 3 courses in Florida

$80 for 18holes? Man...I play the cheap courses...$24 /w cart, $17 without. That's affordable.

If I had to play $80 for 18, I'd only play once or twice a year.

Yeah I do to in the Chicagoland area, but I was in Florida and it's supposed to be one of the best courses in Florida so $80 was a steal

Bumping the golf thread in the middle of winter is mean.

Some of us can still play, it was 72 here yesterday.

It's been in the '80's the last few weeks here. I went out on December 28th, January 12th (Valley Vista Country Club), January 15th (Salt Creek), playing Maderas (yeeeehaaaaw) next month, and many more dates scheduled.

Oh, and I've DVR'd all 72 holes of the first two tournaments in Hawaii and am programmed to record all 5 days of the Bob Hope Classic.

i'm sure it's nice, but i'm just as sure that it's not a top 3 golf course in florida....for $79 a round it may be top 3 in it's price range, but not overall.

btw, what did you shoot? and what tees did you play from?

$79 would not get me passed the gate for a top 5 course in Dallas. Thats a great price.

Here are my two main courses to play this year.

http://www.tour18-dallas.com/sites/courses/layout9.asp?id=422&page=11996 All 18 are simulated from PGA Championship holes. I really just want to play #9, its the replica of the 17th at Sawgrass.
